As Higgins Concrete will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2026 James says it remains focused on strengthening its role in the community. There are always plenty of roles and career pathways both entry level and advanced including truck drivers, testers, concrete batchers and mechanics to name just a few. “We try and offer cadetships to young people coming out of school to give them a career pathway. “We offer training that sets them up to succeed in any career they want to pursue. We also partner with local iwi and have had multiple iwi members become part of the team. It’s been a great win-win partnership.” As well as our involvement in developments throughout the regions, Higgins Concrete enjoy being a part of local communities whether it be through sponsorships, participating in local events and fundraisers, or helping out around community where it can. This has seen it show support to Child Cancer and Groov’s mental health efforts through the rebranding of some of its trucks along with donating portions of proceeds and raising awareness to staff and communities. These actions were later recognised by Concrete NZ Ready Mix, awarding Higgins Concrete Nelson the 2018 Extra Distance award. More recently Higgins Concrete has been acknowledged at the 2022 and 2023 Concrete NZ Awards with Extra Distance and Wellbeing awards. “We’re seen as a big business in Manawatu but at the end of the day we’re a family business – locals support us and we support them.
