16 | Juken NZ Ltd - Masterton Karl says Juken’s forestry division works very hard to achieve the required grade properties for its mills, and says as an example its sawmill logs requires a certain size of sapwood to allow the recovery of clear flitch. “These logs are selected in the harvesting process and sorted and delivered specific to the mill needs. This has been a developed process over a number of years understanding land preparation, seed selection, planting, disease and pest control, right through to thinning, pruning and harvesting.” Karl acknowledges that Juken New Zealand’s success depends on and reflects its commitment to the environment. REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT T T Richard Loader Wairarapa Mill a major player in LVL Of JNL’s total harvest, about 160,000 tonnes is delivered to Wairarapa Mill and other domestic customers. Established in 1990 as a subsidiary to Japan-based WoodOne Corporation, Juken New Zealand has forests in Wairarapa and Gisborne, with a total volume of 32,000 hectares, and a combined annual harvest of 640,000 tonnes. Complementing the forestry operations, Juken own and operate three mills in New Zealand; one in the Wairarapa and two in Kaitaia. Wairarapa Mill also operates a laminated veneer lumber (LVL) line, while Kaitaia runs an MDF and a veneer peeling/drying operation. While the forestry and milling divisions operates independently from each other, Wairarapa Mill is supplied directly from the Wairarapa forests. Of JNL’s total harvest, about 160,000 tonnes is delivered to Wairarapa Mill and other domestic customers. The balance is exported. Wairarapa Mill General Manager Karl Burling says the Wairarapa sawmill runs pruned logs to cut a quarter sawn flitch that is then dried, equalised and finally manufactured into high quality products such as door frames, door jams, flooring and closet materials, all for supply to Japan. “The LVL line runs unpruned log. This is peeled into veneers, dried, individually and glued together to make boards of plywood and LVL, which are then further processed into a range of products for both the Japanese and domestic markets. “ One such product is J-Frame, a Codemarked certified high quality engineered substitute for solid wood framing timber that has excellent visual, strength and grade characteristics. Kaitaia’s MDF plant produces a very high quality MDF and strand board that is used widely throughout New Zealand for construction and joinery.” Mauri is proud to be a trusted raw materials supplier to Juken New Zealand 0800 937 866 | orders@maurianz.com | www.mauri.co.nz
