26 | REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT Booth’s Logistics - Hastings T T Richard Loader Thriving regional network Booth’s warehousing and freight/transport operation plays an integral role in connecting the Hawke’s Bay region with the rest of the country, and with the world beyond. Driven by customer demand for more nationwide support, a series of strategic acquisitions and new developments have enabled Palmerston North based Booth’s Logistics to broaden its service offering, increase its capacity and grow its network. The more extensive regional network sets Booth’s Logistics enroute to achieving its vision of becoming a significant provider of nationwide logistics and warehousing. Formerly known as Booth’s Transport, over the company’s 40-year journey, what started as a single truck delivering the family spuds to market, Booth’s business has grown to over 400 trucks, over 800 team members, 130,000m2 of warehousing and twenty plus locations with a healthy split of branches and depots across all regions in both the North and South Island. Booth’s warehousing and freight/transport operation plays an integral role in connecting the Hawke’s Bay region with the rest of the country, and with the world beyond. Located in Elwood Road, the operation includes 12,000sqm of modern warehousing that encompasses a mix of general and RMP (Risk Management Programme) facilities. “The RMP warehousing is utilised for goods intended for export that require paddock to plate traceability and includes dairy products and other processed or manufactured animal products,” explains locally based Booth’s Logistics Warehousing General Manager, Blair Workman. “To complement this, our Hastings operation also specialises in skeletal and swinglift container transport. Locally, we have about forty truck and trailer units and while most are container units there are also a range of curtainsider and flat decks to meet all our clients’ diverse freight and transport needs.” While many of Booth’s trucks service the local area including Napier Port for both export and import, they also service many other ports across the country, including the Port of Tauranga, for imports and exports and connect the wider New Zealand through freight services. “Here in the Bay, we support a diverse range of industries and sectors, though the primary industry including meat, pet food, fruit and vegetables, and wine are our predominant customer base for exports, along with some manufactured goods. “For imported goods coming into the Bay and freight across the county there is a broad cross section of product.” As well as supporting the Bay through its warehousing and transport services, the Hastings operation provides employment for about ninety local team members. As well as drivers, operators, mechanics, and warehouse staff, there is a wide range of support staff including planners, health and safety professionals and administrators — all making sure the Booth’s machine is running like clockwork and the customers’ needs are being met on time. “We have a real depth of service offering when you take into account our people and equipment, and that sets us apart as warehouse and transport operators. Some of our people have been with us for a very long time. We celebrated twenty-five years just recently with one of our people, and another one is coming up to almost thirty years. That’s testament to the loyalty and experience that we have within the team.” PROUDLY SUPPORTING BOOTH’S GROUP bridgestone.co.nz Bridgestone provide Booth’s Group with market-leading products, advice and nationwide support to help them achieve the lowest cost per kilometre possible.
