| 27 REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT Turfrey Limited Turfrey delivers across the regions Turfrey’s size allows state-of-the-art investment in equipment, technology and systems. Operating at scale in a fast-changing, notoriously tough industry can be challenging, but with some of New Zealand’s largest commercial construction projects behind them, Turfrey is excited about the future. Specialists in commercial roofing, insulated panel, plumbing and drainage across the North Island (especially in their key market south of Auckland down to Wellington), Turfrey is unique in operating a multi-trade structure at scale. “Our geographic spread across the North Island gives us flexibility and means we can work with national clients on multiple jobs simultaneously with a consistent performance and team,” says Managing Director, Brad Turfrey. A rock-solid focus on building team culture over the past decade has resulted in a reliable, loyal and highly skilled workforce and has given Turfrey the ability to recruit and retain the best people across their specialties. “We are proud of the projects we work on across New Zealand, and we understand that when it comes to large scale commercial projects, having a positive relationship with a reliable and experienced subcontractor is invaluable for our clients,” says Managing Director, Brad Turfrey. Being good at what you do isn’t enough in today’s competitive market, believes Brad. Strong relationships and excellent communication are often the x-factors that have ensured repeat business for key main contractors and commercial clients. “We want the people we work for to always know they can pick up the phone and talk frankly and get the information they need at any stage during a project. “Because of our experience, we have earned a reputation for accurate, fair pricing and often saving cost to our clients because we can troubleshoot and add value before a project even gets off the ground,” explains Brad. While the company’s roots almost 50 years ago lay in smaller domestic work, Turfrey now specialises in large scale projects such as prisons, hospitals and schools and private industrial developments, especially in the food processing industry. Turfrey’s size allows state-of-the-art investment in equipment, technology and systems, resulting in higher productivity, safety and accountability. Health and safety is a cornerstone of the business and Turfrey has invested strongly in developing rigorous H&S documentation, site practices and culture. Its trade staff are Site Safe Commercial Passport holders, have NZQA Safe Working at Heights training as well as other industry safety qualifications based on the work they carry out. Turfrey also runs Site App Pro software across smart devices for all employees providing leading edge, real time safety. This investment in Company safety was recognised when the Company won the national Safe 365 / Trade Me Jobs ‘NZ’s Safest Place to Work’ – Large Enterprise and Supreme Award in 2018. Going forward, Brad says the Company feels positive about the continuing investment being made in infrastructure in New Zealand and being in a position to support the main contractors and developers making this happen. T T Karen Phelps “Despite the current economic downturn, the longer-term outlook for New Zealand is a really positive one and that’s reflected in growing investment in the sort of infrastructure and development that will take us into the next 50 years,” says Brad.
