Launched at the beginning of 2022 by builder Hayden Ross and his partner Rachel Ward, Build Hawkes Bay has quickly established itself as a go-to for a wide range of construction projects, from new homes to commercial developments. Rachel likewise brings a unique and comprehensive skillset. A marine biologist and teacher, her attention to detail sees her cover the administration side of their building business. Rachel says she particularly notices that other builders often positively comment on aspects of Hayden’s workmanship and the high quality levels he achieves. “I’m on the tools all the time, keeping an eye on quality control and building each client’s project,” says Hayden. “Because we have been working in Hawkes Bay for so long we have great relationships with subbies and suppliers.” This hands-on approach and local knowledge have proven invaluable, especially in the aftermath of recent natural disasters. “It meant we could get people back into their homes a lot quicker,” says Hayden referring to the cyclone rebuild work the company has undertaken.Hayden says he never likes to turn a job away and the result is that the company’s portfolio is diverse from small jobs like a fence or deck right up to very large projects. Recently this included an 18-house development completed in just ten months and a unique commercial shed with living quarters in Bayview, Napier. The 400sqm-shed project has a mezzanine floor living quarters. Hayden says it has architectural aspects on the inside but looks like a shed on the outside and will serve as the clients’ home while they plan a more ambition home build cantilevered over a cliff face.Build Hawkes Bay’s work extends include renovations and repairs, such as the first major project the company completed after opening its doors in 2022, located on the outskirts of Havelock North. “We re-did the whole home,” says Hayden. “Stripped out and completely renovated and repaired it along with modernising it a little as well.”The company’s commitment to quality and efficiency, along with the boom in work after the extreme weather events, has kept it busy, even as other parts of New Zealand experienced an economic slowdown. Rachel and Hayden says that Build Hawkes Bay has plans for further growth along with undertaking its first property development project in 2025 - two high-end townhouse on Marine Parade. The couple hope this move into property development marks an exciting new chapter for the company. “We’ve always looked at doing spec houses but haven’t had the time until now,” says Rachel. “So it will be exciting to do the first Build Hawkes Bay development project next year.” As Hawkes Bay recovers and continues to grow and evolve, Rachel and Hayden say that Build Hawkes Bay aims to play a crucial role in shaping its landscape and supporting its communities.
