| 61 NZTA Downer DEVELOPMENT T T to page 62 T T Richard Loader Driver safety a priority at hotspot Between 2019 and 2023 on SH3 between New Plymouth to Hawera there have been eleven fatalities. Saving lives and avoiding serious injuries is a key driver for road safety upgrades along State Highway 3 between New Plymouth and Hawera, which is being undertaken by NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA). The project spans an approximate length of 55 kilometres of State Highway. NZTA Project Manager Sree Nutulapati says the project comes from a national programme of work identifying how NZTA can improve safety on the state highway network, concentrating on sections of the state highway that have a higher crash risk based on the data we have available. Between 2019 and 2023 on SH3 between New Plymouth to Hawera there have been eleven fatalities and forty-seven serious injuries. Certain sections, between Inglewood, Stratford, and Eltham particularly, have a higher number of crashes. “The way we advance the project is that we analyse the type of crashes that have occurred on the network to see if they are head-on, run-off or intersection crashes and then focus on how those accidents could be avoided in the future. As we progress through certain sections of the project we engage with the community and council to identify what mitigation measures are appropriate to improve road safety.
