Multi-award-winning architecture studio Designgroup Stapleton Elliott (DGSE) has once again been recognised at this year’s Te Kāhui Whaihanga New Zealand Institute of Architects (NZIA) – Local Architecture Awards. DGSE Managing Director Nigel Dong says that while the team is proud of all their projects, some projects are exemplar, and worthy of celebrating. “It’s always great to be acknowledged by our industry peers, but it’s also a great way of recognising the success of our projects with our clients, and to have them recognised as a project partner.” DGSE’s work with Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) on the design of their new national premises, showcases the company’s innovative and creative design capability and its collaborative relationship with the client. The project won the Interior Architecture category at the Wellington Architecture Awards. “This has been one of the most significant workplace projects recently, certainly in Wellington and probably nationally, and we believe it sets a new standard for government workplace environments,” says Nigel. “The fitout was designed to a very strict budget, but we’ve been able to achieve a very high standard within those budget constraints.” Designgroup Stapleton Elliott ARCHITECTURE Putting a smile on their clients’ faces by making their lives just a little simpler through smart home technology and automation is all in a day’s work for Tony and Selwyn Cook who own and operate Cooks AVS, a specialist provider of great audio/visual and security systems and solutions. “Home technology can be complex and hard to use, and people need to be tech-savvy,” says Tony. “We give our customers an easy solution to take control of their homes. We give them a solution that declutters the remote control drawer, provide lighting control that creates a more aesthetically pleasing environment, the air-conditioning comes on before the customer gets home, the blinds are down and curtains pulled.” Located in Napier, Cooks AVS was founded in 2015 and provides its specialist services, including the supply, installation and demonstration of high-quality equipment throughout the North Island. “Our core customers are typically mid to high-end home owners, but we also do a lot of AV integration and automation for businesses, and local councils.” The journey starts when Tony and Selwyn sit down with their client to understand their requirements, their lifestyle and how they want to operate their homes. Based on their knowledge of home technology, the brothers make suggestions about Decluttering the remote control drawer how automation and AV integration can enhance their lifestyles now and into the future. “The solutions we offer are bespoke and customised to the individual client ’s requirements and their home,” says Selwyn. “No two houses are ever the same. Some home owners want everything with everything controlled and automated, while another might just want a single remote control for the audio visual system, and it ’s all App driven. We always under promise and over deliver.” A recent project was for a new home in Bayview which required an IT network throughout the home, along with the AV systems and home automation. The project included five audio zones, each with high-end equipment, and each of the seven bedrooms had a television connected to a digital network. System integration included lighting, AV, HVAC, pool cover, skylight windows, and electronic opaque windows. While Cooks AVS offers a wide range of product brands, Tony and Selwyn have some favourites that they know integrate well with automation system and are reliable. “Our passion is what we do for our customers, and our customers’ trust in us to provide a great service and to back-up the products we sell. We like to form a strong bond with our clients and many of them become our friends.” Cooks AVS have a combined 60+ years industry experience in the audio visual and security industry and have become recognized and in demand throughout Hawkes Bay and beyond.
