When Grahame Boyd had the opportunity to help friends design their Greytown holiday home, it also gave him the chance to collaborate with a builder he has huge respect for. Grahame worked with Andy Press on a Master Builder of the Year award winning home in Wellington (Khandallah), several years ago, and for this latest project they have combined their years of experience to create a special home away from home for the Wellington client. Situated in one of the oldest areas of Greytown but in a new development, the house backs onto an orchard and the use of trees creates a natural boundary that fits seamlessly within the existing landscape. “They wanted an open relaxed vacation feel of a property that they can just lock up and leave when not using.” One of the key factors of the home is a separate bedroom wing for visitors, and so the design brief was about achieving the separation of spaces to articulate the views, as well as making sure there was ample sun, privacy and wind protection. “It’s a contemporary house with a nod to traditional materials and proportions.” A mixture of both stained and painted vertical weatherboards breaks down the form and scale of the house - also making it appropriate to the old heritage town. Angling the house on the section opened up the back of the property to give the family some great spaces to work with. “The development is like a series of cottages rather than just one house, with high volumes and high level windows that accentuates the height and the light coming in.” The separate spaces are broken up by an internal courtyard, and high end materials such as a Caesar stone kitchen benchtop and solid timber floors in the main living areas completes the look. Grahame has been in architecture for 40 years, and loves the collaborative process between himself, the client and builder to create exciting designs. Starting out under Warren Mahoney where he spent 18 years learning the craft, Grahame went out on his own 12 years ago, working on hospitality projects in downtown Wellington and other large commercial projects. When Covid-19 hit he decided to become more specialised and has enjoyed working in the Wairarapa where the different environment creates some new challenges. He’s also about to start designing a large commercial project in Fiji and is working on some new house designs on the Kapiti Coast. Grahame’s been involved in other large scale commercial projects in both Fiji and Australia before, and says it’s what he learns from those developments that keep him moving forward. He loves to be able to control the whole design process and aligns himself with competent and like-minded people in the industry that share similar work values. Many of his clients are repeat customers and have also become good friends. “It’s about surrounding yourself with enjoyable people and what I like to do is ensure there are no surprises so that everyone is on the same journey.” Homes built with quality craftsmanship With high standards and a knack for pulling off what sometimes seemed impossible.
