Recently completed in Martinborough, this high-end residential home has ticked all the boxes for Edge Design Studio’s happy customers, meeting the brief, the budget, and the timeline, and producing the type of end result that designer Dylan Davies strives for. Edge Design Studio was established in 2010 in Hamilton by Dylan and Sandra Davies. Dylan had spent many years working in construction with a heavy involvement in design before an injury forced him from the tools. He had an obvious talent for design and now he was able to incorporate his construction experience and bring to the marketplace really detailed plans that were going to work on site. “It’s easy to draw something that can’t actually be built,” he says. “As a builder I’ve worked with plans that wouldn’t provide details for anything that was too difficult, and the builder is meant to work it out on site. Now I’m designing, I always include all the difficult details in my drawings so the builder knows what to do. We get excellent feedback from both builders and councils on the quality of our drawings and the attention to detail, and I think that’s why we’ve got so much work.” Dylan prides himself on meeting clients’ budgets and although it can be hard to act as the ‘money police’, he doesn’t shy away from making his clients aware of where they might be pushing their budgets with the decisions they’re making. “I don’t enjoy saying no but I will always make sure the design is in line with the budget.” The client’s brief also must be adhered to and meeting both is a balancing act. A designer’s communication skills are paramount and this isn’t restricted to just listening. “You have to be able to understand and interpret, because not all people are able to clearly articulate their wishes. Everyone’s dream home is so different, so individual, and as a designer you have to be able to let go of your personal preferences. Maybe clients will want something you wouldn’t put in your own house, or some parts of the programme you see as essential will be pulled out, but as long as the clients are very happy with it, that’s the result we want.” Edge Design Studio took over this Martinborough project in 2019 with Dylan redesigning an over-budget plan and also designing a two bedroom home for the clients to live in until they were ready to start on their main home project in 2022.
