Beachside sanctuary a stunning achievement for Dawson Building Co. The teamat Dawson Building have shown their prowess for technical and complex builds with the completion of a stunning beachside sanctuary at Taylor Bay, Mahia. Perched above Taylors Bay with views back to Napier andWairoa, the hilltop hideaway designed by architect John Hoogerbrug for his brother and sister-in-law, is nestled amongst Pohutukawa trees on a site where the couple used to camp. The project started in February 2018 and was completed in June 2020, with a number of Covid-19 interruptions along the way. The teamconsisted of two quali ied builders and one apprentice who stayed in a local batch during the week, led by project manager Peter Gourlay. The building project overall was a seamless integration of design and practical application communicated and delivered by our clients, Peter and Penny Hoogerbrug, the Dawson Building crew and Hoogerbrug Architects. Through living on site, it signi icantly contributed to creating a cohesive low throughout the building as it gentlymelded itself into the surrounding environment allowing the story to unfold. There was a substantial amount of internal pre-planning work done during this part of the house build so the natural timbers could align through each roof plane. The building crew took into consideration the two di erent angles, with the inished look continuously connected fromone ceiling plane to another. Another interior building feature was the critical detail needed to weave together the aluminium joinery into the wooden building interior so as not to lose the feel for the natural timbers. The layout provided some challenges for work access as the surrounding native trees were to be retained and left as they were so they could continue to grow closely alongside the building. Due to the cross slope of the land tasks such as levelling the sca olding needed to be given consideration in planning. A traditional chunky board called Duralarch was used to bring together the outsidematerials and achieve amodern natural look as the craft sawn woodmade these seamless connections. A high level of carpentry was required to inish the detailing, as each corner andweatherboard were required to it together completely for this to be responsive to the overall scope. An example of this was seen in the inal use of all the di erent moving exterior parts, creating an understanding of how the individual windows and doors would unfold naturally at each stage. A stand-out build, the project was shortlisted in the housing category at the Gisborne and Hawke’s Bay Architecture Awards alongside 11 other projects. The winner will be announced on June 14. For Dawson Building, this project was a pleasure to be involvedwith, made easier by the inclusive approach taken from the start. To date, this beachside sanctuary continues to lourish as it caters for the growing number of friends, family and visitors who come to enjoy and appreciate what has been created here. • Commercial • New Housing • Insurance Repairs • Rural Buildings For Quality Workmanship, contact Peter Dawson today. 06 867 5040 / 0274 515 263 fpdaws@gisborne.net.nz www.dawsonbuilders.co.nz
