After thirty years spent building and renovating homes, Jarrod Williams, the Managing Director of Hawke’s Bay company JPW Builders, remains passionate about delivering a product that is as perfect as it can be. “The team also have a uniform and present a professional image. If clients see you as professional, tidy and respectable that does go a long way, I believe. We are also only as good as our subcontractors, and so expect the same high level of professionalism from them.” Originally based in Auckland, JPW Builders was founded in 2006 but made the shift to Hawke’s Bay thirteen years ago. “My wife, Caryn, was born and bred in the bay and we saw it as a positive lifestyle move for us and our future family. Thirteen years down the track and three young kids later we love everything that the bay has to offer.” Initially building quality ‘bread and butter’ middle of the road homes and renovation work, things took a different tack when JPW Builders was offered the opportunity to build a high-end architectural home, and things snow-balled from there. “We’re still building those middle of the road homes and renovations, but the high-end architectural work just seems to come our way. You build relationships with a few architects, develop a reputation for quality work, and they recommend you to their clients. We’ve just completed a three-storey five million dollar home in Westshore for one of our repeat customers that was designed by Christchurch practice Three Sixty Architecture. We were on that project for eighteen months.” Jarrod says some of the renovation projects can be quite substantial and complex, running into the hundreds of thousands of dollars, with many almost a complete rebuild. “We don’t do any commercial work, though some of the homes we build might as well be light commercial with what goes into them.” Based out the back of Hastings towards Cape Kidnappers in the small rural beachside town of Te Awanga, JPW Builders mostly operates around the leafy suburb of Havelock North, Napier and, of course, the Te Awanga/ Haumoana area. “We focus on one project at a time and when we get half way through that we will start another one. By the time you get to a certain stage of a house, there is not a lot of building left, it’s all subcontractor work, and so you need that continuity of work.” Jarrod continues to be on the tools about 60% of the time, though acknowledges that the time will come when he may need to pull back. “I am the face of the business; I organise and price the projects, run the jobs and provide full project management. Our pricing is all transparent, with no hidden costs. We have won jobs, because all the major quotes are there and the customer can see exactly where the money is being spent. I also believe that communication of any issues that are coming up is always key to a successful customer relationship and any mistakes are dealt with straight away, and not left to fester.” Certifying Plumber, Gasfitter & Drainlayer Specialists in new housing, renovations and light commercial work.
