In June 2021, Foster Construction broke ground on the new NIWA site at the University of Waikato. The complex, which is due to be complet- ed by April 2023, will include a two storey 4500sqm building with laboratories and visitor facilities on the ground floor and office space above, along with a 1200sqm storage and workshop building, a free-standing secure chemical store and outdoor experimentation facilities. It is a welcome development for the NIWA Hamilton team of more than 150 people, who are keenly looking forward to moving into their new world-class science facilities. “Our existing facilities in Hamilton have be- come functionally obsolete,” says Dr Michael Bruce, NIWA’s Regional Manager for Hamilton. “This is all about preparing facilities for new generations of scientists. In one respect we’re designing not only for our current staff, but also for future staff and multiple generations of upcoming scientists. “Everyone is starting to get super excited about the future.” The new complex will further strengthen NIWA’s long standing partnership with the University of Waikato. “Our second big partnership in the Waikato is with Waikato Tainui and, in fact, the land we are sub-leasing from the University for this development is owned by Waikato Tainui.” T to page 8 PRECAST CUSTOMISED WITH PRIDE 8 Rockford Street, Matamata 07 888 7674 | sales@vidaprecast.co.nz
