Spanning five decades in business, the gold- en key to the company’s ongoing success has been remaining privately owned and operat- ed, and close to its team and customers. Managing Director Geoff Bourke says Energyworks is very much one team with the owners intimately involved in the day-to-day running of the business. “The owners get their sleeves rolled up in the business and that keeps us in touch with what’s going on, in tune with performance and client feedback. “We’re very quality based and you have to keep striving to deliver excellence every day, bringing your whole team on that journey so they fully understand what the values of the business are.” Aside from the big corporates operating out of New Plymouth, Energyworks is one of the town’s larger privately owned employers with 145 employees. “One of the things that we’ve instilled through our values is that the team need to come with a sense of passion and purpose in their work. “It’s a long road to sixty-five if you don’t have some kind of energy or passion about what you’re doing and a sense of fulfillment at the end of a day. If you have that passion and pur- pose, generally you’re performing pretty well and they are the people we want to harness. “We have all our own staff and have the opportunity to invest in them, train them and watch them grow from apprentice to trades- man to supervisor, and see them do well outside of work too.” Operating from modern, purpose built engineering and industrial coating facilities in Bell Block, the industrial estate of New Plym- outh, the bulk of Energyworks projects are in Taranaki for the oil and gas sector with a growing volume of work coming from outside the region in other industrial process sectors. Some work also comes from the South Is- land, particularly around the ports’ tank farms and some of the LPG facilities there. “Effectively we’re an industrial plumber, with a focus on industrial process piping. Be- cause we’re dealing with high pressures and high temperatures all piping is steel. Really our job is to keep a liquid or a gas contained within a solid pipe. At our end of the spectrum there’s a very high consequence if you get it wrong because you might have 300 bar of pressure or 100 degrees Celsius or higher. If something goes wrong it can go wrong quite catastrophically.” While fabrication and coatings are Ener- gyworks’ main on-premise capability, which comes with a lot of quality control and testing, the company also offers on-site installation of what it has built. “There’s also the on-going maintenance of what we build and we have twenty-five people in the business focused on asset maintenance around the regions. Then there’s project planning and management capacity. Primarily we’re focused on the energy sector, but we work for any of those big industries that have industrial processes where high heat and high pressure are used to turn a raw product into something else.”
