There are many different sorts of boats and other pieces of equipment that will interest them.” Inside the main building there will be multiple specialist laboratories and shared lab spaces, with windows to reveal some of the laboratory activities to visitors as they are welcomed on-site, opening up opportunities for education outreach with schools and the wider community. Expeditions and field work are a core part of NIWA’s freshwater, climate and marine research. The new complex is well-designed to support expedition activity, with ample storage for NIWA’s fleet of boats, land-based vehicles and an enormous range of equip- ment, together with well organised space for clean-up and wash down. The outdoor experimentation area will be equipped with a weather station, an equipment calibration sta- tion and an outdoor sample processing facility. Along with carparks for staff and visitors, there will be bike parks and secure bike storage, charging facilities for e-bikes, scooters and skateboards, and EV charging stations. NIWA is delighted to have Foster Con- struction building the new complex. NIWA’s Property Programme Manager Martin Lowery commented, “They are a highly credible and strong performing regional contractor. All in all, we have assembled a great project team to see this through from start to finish.” Also on the project team are: The Building Intelligence Group, Warren and Mahoney Architects, Lab-Works Architecture, Six Ideas, Becca, Marshall Day Acoustics, RLB and Boffa Miskell. This landmark project is part of a future property programme being rolled out nation- wide by NIWA. Wellington and Christchurch are in line for similarly substantial upgrades, with additional investment also going into smaller centres. “We have just opened new fa- cilities in Twizel and are developing major new fish farming research facilities in Northland.” YOUR PARTNER IN CONSTRUCTION Ph 0800 4CAMEX Branches in Cambridge & Taupo www.camexcivil.co.nz Ecologist Nichola Salmond explains coastal sampling techniques to students.
