80 | BUILDING House of the Year 2021: Mike Campbell Construction Award winner fit for a king and queen T Karen Phelps Located on the outskirts of Palmerston North, the home spans an immense 603sqm. A stunningly complex home requiring an abundance of craftsmanship has seen first time entrants to the Registered Master Builders House of the Year competi- tion receive gold. The home, built by Mike Campbell Con- struction, received the award in the Resene New Home over $2 million category for the Manawatu and Whanganui region. The home was a two-year collaborative process Mike Campbell Construction, the homeowner and architect Mark Field to deliver exactly what the client wanted, say Mike Campbell Construc- tion owners Mike and Melissa Campbell. “We’re not afraid of hard work and a long build,” says Mike. “I have a really great team of builders and sub-trades that were the key to this project. Each showcased their excellent workmanship and came up with new and improved ideas to deliver the client’s vision.” Located on the outskirts of Palmerston North, the home spans an immense 603sqm, with the main area encompassing five bed- rooms, four bathrooms plus powder room and two living areas. An upstairs rumpus room overlooks a suite of horse stables at the rear of the property. The garage includes a well-equipped gym and there’s a bar and lounge with a kitchen and additional bathroom. Mike says it was a complex highly detailed build. There are multiple columns throughout the home, raking ceilings with tongue and groove, and plenty of unusual angles. Details such as recessed lighting around the edges of the ceilings of certain rooms, means the home takes on a whole new dimension of beauty at night. Other stunning features include a schist fireplace, granite benchtops, premium fixtures and fittings, and a five-star main suite. The detailed panelling in the living areas and hall- ways was handcrafted by the Mike Campbell Construction team as was the feature wall in the bar area. The woodwork the client had already hand painted was constructed by the team and fitted together like a puzzle. Based in Palmerston North, Mike, who offers over 20 years experience as a builder, started Mike Campbell Construction in 2007. The company’s clientele almost exclusive- ly come via word of mouth referral. Mike says the reason why is simple – the focus is to create a home or space reflective of the client’s personal aesthetic, where quality workmanship and attention to detail remain paramount, irrespective of the budget or size of the project. “We always follow what the client wants. It’s all about delivering their ideas so our job is to encourage these ideas out of them to deliver their forever home. “It’s about their character coming through in their home and we just evolve with that. For example on this project the design evolved with the client’s ideas.” As part of the process Mike usually draws the first concept drawing. It’s an opportunity to get to know his clients and their person- alities better and how they like to live so he ascertain what they really want in their home. It also ensures the design works with their budget. “We are not salespeople,” adds Melissa. “We are there to build a house they are excited about, which we in turn makes us passionate about each build.” As a small boutique builder Mike oversees the entire project and is the one point of con- tact for clients. This builds trust and keeps the project flowing smoothly. Focusing on usually one job at a time and being hands on is also important in delivering a top quality result. Mike Campbell Builders has completed projects from high end, mid-range and entry level residential builds and alterations, spec houses, multi-housed purpose built student accommodation, shop fit-outs, and transport- able builds in the Manawatu. At present the company is working on a country home new build and is in the design process on several other projects including an aquagym for the horses of the House of the Year home as the project continues to evolve with the client’s ideas expressing his personal passions.
