86 | 2021 a year for the record books T T Sue Russell BUILDING House of the Year 2021: Wayne Adam Builders T his year has been a very successful one for Palmerston North residential building business Wayne Adam Build- ers, taking out several awards at the annual Registered Master Builders House of the Year Awards in the Manawatu/Whanganui district. Entering a beautifully engineered and craft- ed home, settled next to a golf course, in the Resene New Home over $2 Million category, was a no-brainer and Wayne says he was not surprised the 387m2 home received a gold award, an outdoor living excellence award, was chosen category winner and selected in the Top 100 group. The brief to Emerge Architect, from the owners who love to play golf and enjoy time T T to page 88 “This was a very large project for us and a commitment of 18 months full-time work, for myself and my two apprentices.” with family and entertaining friends, was to create a home that would offer them private spaces to be in, ample space for guests to be with others or on their own and plenty of space for their much-loved art collection, including a bronze memorial sculpture. The combination of Otago schist and pre-finished aluminium cladding sets off the artwork to advantage, while an impressive entrance gallery of stone sets the stage for the open, bright and light areas inside. “This was a very large project for us and a commitment of 18 months full-time work, for myself and my two apprentices,” Wayne says. The home features four large bedrooms, several living spaces, media room and office/ yoga room and while it is sprawling in nature, the floorplan beautifully connects one space to the next. Outside, the treatment of the Otago schist creates a bold statement, and the way the outside spaces have been positioned allows connection to the environment beyond while also a sense of privacy. Wayne established his company seven years ago, however prior to this had worked for a builder for 20 years who had a great reputa- tion. “He has a good name around town especial- ly around high-end builds, so by association I found work coming my way.” Beyond brand new homes, Wayne says a mix of alterations, renovations and outdoor landscaping projects provides a great balance and ongoing work as well as plenty of oppor- tunities for his apprentices, both of whom are nearly through their training, to cut their teeth on.
