BUILDING Holmes Construction - Wellington T Karen Phelps T he markets in Wairarapa and Welling- ton are buoyant for Holmes Construc- tion with the main challenge being supply delays due to the pandemic and labour constraints. “It’s just a matter of working through the process, looking for alternative products etc. Good relationships with suppliers. The rest of the world is opening up so supply should start to get better,” says company project manager Wayne Regnault. Good communication has been another important factor – both with clients and local councils, who Wayne says have been very supportive. “Sometimes we have been able to deliver a project to a client to start using even if we are still waiting for some items that we can go back and finish later. Likewise councils have been proactive in understanding alternate ma- terial swops that sometimes need to happen. It’s about everyone being as flexible as possi- ble and working together to find solutions.” Holmes Construction is working on a num- ber of key projects in the regions. Underway is a Four Square supermarket upgrade in Martinborough and winery upgrades for Te Kairanga Wines and Palliser Estate. The company continues to work on Grey- town Orchards retirement village, a $120 million development on the east side of Grey- town in the South Wairarapa. This has seen Holmes Construction working on a number of different products in the development from stand-alone houses to duplexes. Greytown Orchards will eventually include 180 homes and up to 120 care beds on the 13-hectare site as well as its own community facility consist- ing of lounges, café and restaurant, gym, and indoor pool. In Wellington the company is working on various school projects and an upgrade to Upper Hutt Cosmopolitan Club. Holmes Construction was started in 1957 by Will Holmes and the family tradition on which the business was founded remains strong as it is still owned and managed by the Holmes family with three generations actively engaged in the business. Today the company boasts offices in Wellington and the Wairarapa. Holmes Construction focuses on commercial and industrial builds as well as high quality architectural new home builds, alterations and extensions. The company is a member of the Registered Master Builders Association of New Zealand and has previously won the Registered Master Builder Supreme Award for the Wellington/Wairarapa region as well as the Registered Master Builder of the Year commercial award. Holmes Construction has experience in pro- jects of several different contractual concepts including design and build, negotiated, no- vated design and build, conventional tender, fixed price and lump sum. All projects are fully project managed. The company’s services are backed by standardised paper based and electronic systems to manage document and information transfer between its consultants, suppliers, sub contractors and staff. It also holds the Coresteel franchises for Wellington and the Wairarapa and is pres- ently constructing the sports hub at the New Zealand Campus of Innovation and Sport in Upper Hutt using the system. Wayne says it is the company’s people that set it apart: “They are skilled and have the ability to interact successfully with other project team members. Some have been here 30 or 40 years.” With many diverse projects on the go he says it is an exciting time to be in construction: “There are some great projects out there and the detail of design is far superior to when I started in building. The industry has really moved forward and it’s a great time to be in construction.” 21 VILLA STREET MASTERTON Office phone: 06 370 3200 OR call Pat: 027 524 8723 Email: verlaff@xtra.co.nz • P.O Box 202 Proud to support Holmes Construction Group Ltd Tumu is pleased to have worked with Holmes Construction Ltd for many years. i l i .
