30 | CentrePort Ltd: Seaview Resillience Project Kim Newth Project protecting a critical asset REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT to page 32 CentrePort’s Seaview Wharf and fuel pipeline play a vital part in maintaining fuel supply to Wellington and across the lower North Island. The Seaview Energy Resilience Project, which got underway in 2021, is boosting the resilience of both wharf and pipeline to futureproof this critical asset. The project is being completed by CentrePort in three stages over five years, in conjunction with partners Z Energy (fuel industry lead) and Brian Perry Civil (BPC). “Seaview Wharf is a critical lifeline and a commercial asset that services the Wellington region, both in good times and emergencies,” “The wharf has been in service for 50 years and it’s due for an upgrade. This project is going to provide us with a resilient asset to serve the community and the economy into the future.” observes Majd el-Moussaoui, CentrePort Ferries and Bulk Manager. “The wharf has been in service for 50 years and it’s due for an upgrade. This project is going to provide us with a resilient asset to serve the community and the economy into the future.” The futureproofing work involves replacing the pipeline from ships to storage tanks on the wharf; upgrading of the wharf area (damaged in the 2016 Kaikoura earthquake) to meet international standards for handling bulk fuel; and replacing pipelines that run from Port Road to fuel storage terminals on the foreshore. The Seaview pipeline is being set up to ensure it can take not only multiple grades of petrol, diesel and aviation fuels but also biofuels and other green energy fuels. Taking care of the environment is a key priority for the project team, with marine mammal observers on-site during pile driving operations and a bubble curtain deployed to minimise marine noise in the harbour. Water quality is being closely monitored. “We have worked with local councils as well as relevant experts to make sure we have measures in place to take care of issues such as construction sounds, protection of the aquifer in the harbour and making sure we look after our little blue penguins as well as marine mammals in this area.” Following the replacement of the fuel pipeline along the Seaview marina and foreshore, the focus of works this year has shifted to upgrading Seaview Wharf.
