32 | Wharf upgrade on track Piling works underway on the wharf upgrade. from page 30 CentrePort Ltd: Seaview Resillience Project REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT This work includes repairs and strengthening of the wharf structure, with geotechnical assessments guiding the design - and the pipeline section from ship berth to Point Howard. Throughout this project, CentrePort has been engaging with stakeholders such as residents, Greater Wellington Regional Council (GWRC) and the Hutt City Council and consulting with Taranaki Whānui and Ngāti Toa Rangatira. Monthly updates are keeping the community well informed. Good progress is being made by BPC on installing piles on the wharf with work being scheduled around times when ships are berthed. Between ship visits, this work is being done in shifts around the clock using a barge-mounted crane and piling rig. Two piles have been completed to the rear of the wharf’s amenities building and two piles at the northern berthing dolphin structure. The team is on track to have another two piles finished by Christmas 2022. “The barge has got to be positioned really close to the existing wharf to install the driven and bored piles,” says Helen Russell, BPC’s construction manager at Seaview Wharf. “The tolerances are really precise – the engineers and barge crew have got to get the barge within 75mm of the final pile position which is a really difficult task to do with a piece of equipment that large.” In the new year, the piling rig will be transferred off the barge and onto the wharf deck to carry out piling for the southern berthing dolphin. Temporary works are being done on the wharf deck to spread the load of the heavy rig so the team can operate safely and without damaging the wharf structure. As well, walkways being installed under the wharf to allow access to raker piles are now almost complete.
