Drainways Contracting Ltd: HDC Frimley Park REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT Undertaking the Frimley, Waiaroha and Eastbourne water treatment and pipeline projects in Hastings has opened up a whole new line of work for Drainways, which is the lead contractor. “In the past we would take a subcontractor role on sewer, stormwater and water drainage projects. So this means we now have the capabilities to offer whole packages to clients both locally and nationally,” says Drainways managing director Mark Currie. The Eastbourne pipeline project has seen work completed on three large pipelines – a pipe carrying raw water from the existing bores to the new treatment plant and two treated water pipelines going out ranging in size from 400-710mm. Mark says a key challenge was laying pipes below the water table, which involved dewatering, silt control, ground collapse prevention and working through public car parks. He says the team’s knowledge, experience and efficiency around groundwater and dewatering has been key coupled with Drainways’ recognised speed at laying pipelines through the open cut method. Working beside an existing 300mm untreated water pipeline that serviced part of Hastings saw the team innovate to come up with ideas to support the pipeline to successfully complete the job. The Eastbourne pipeline contract was familiar territory to the team but the other two aspects of the overall contract saw Drainways take a primarily project management role. The Frimley project involves a range of new water supply bores, new reticulation pipelines, construction of a water treatment plant and an 8-million litre storage reservoir. The Waiaroha plant, sits on an incredibly high profile site on Council-owned land on the corner of Southampton Street East and Hastings Street South. Drainways is a Hawke’s Bay family owned business started in 1976 by Mark’s father Owen. Today the company employs Curries in many key positions giving a unique feel to the business. “We’re a tight-knit team that believes in professional service and old-fashioned values: we do what we say we’ll do and our word is our bond,” says Mark. “Our track record of high calibre workmanship, thinking on our feet and willingness to do whatever is needed to complete projects within set timeframes and budgets has made us a trusted partner of councils and local bodies, as well as large industrial and commercial interests.” The company employs a team of around 30 staff and Mark says that the family spirit permeates every aspect of the team. He says Drainways has a rare ability to complete large projects but also has the flexibility to complete smaller jobs for clients. “These projects in Hastings we are doing are major, some of the largest ones that have been built in the district and they are very complex. “Completing these will be a huge milestone for Drainways, especially with the challenges of the pandemic. “Our team is coming out stronger and with more experience than ever before. “This means we are in a great position to complete Three Waters projects for any council around the country.” · Wastewater Treatment · Chemical Dosing · Mechanical Engineering · Maintenance · Water Treatment · Design & Build · Pump Stations · Shutdowns www.maxtarr.co.nz | 0800 363 888 | enquiries@maxtarr.co.nz
