| 41 Horizons Regional Council REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT Horizons is working in conjunction with project steering groups, local iwi and district councils. Robert Cashmore, of Cashmore Contracting, is not exaggerating when he describes his team’s current project for Horizons Regional Council – to repair and reinstate the North Mole in Whanganui - as “iconic”. The North Mole work is part of Te Pūwaha, the Whanganui port revitalisation project. The more than $50m port project is being funded by the Government, Whanganui District Council, Horizons Regional Council, Q West Boat Builders and the Whanganui District Employment Training Trust. Cashmore Contracting is placing around 30,000 tonnes of rock in the Whanganui River to upgrade the North Mole structure. The work is being undertaken to ensure the river alignment is maintained and to protect critical port infrastructure from erosion and sea encroachment. Cashmore Contracting is proud to be securing the future of the North Mole, which is highly valued by the Whanganui community. “I’m a local boy myself and keen on the outdoors and ishing,” says Rob. “It is going to be very rewarding ishing from there in future and being able to say, ‘we built that’. I do see it as iconic for Whanganui.” Cashmore Contracting has around four to ive people on site every day, working the excavators and dump Cashmore Contracting forges ahead on key port, river projects trucks, in line with strict safety standards. This has been a 24-month project for the team with completion anticipated in March 2023. North Mole is just the latest in a number of infrastructure resilience projects the team has undertaken for Horizons Regional Council, such as works to strengthen river stop bank networks. “We’re just starting a new project to place rock in the Manawatū River to re-align part of it and prevent erosion of the existing stop banks. Flood protection work like this is so important – if it wasn’t done, residential homes could be put at risk in future years as there are a number of lifestyle blocks near the river.” Cashmore Contracting has a leet of 20 diggers, plus bulldozers, trucks, loaders and other machinery for every job. As well as working for Horizons, Cashmore contracts to Whanganui District Council, Genesis Power, local builders and other businesses. Metal from their quarry is supplied to various roading projects. In the forestry sector, Cashmore works directly with private woodlot owners and sells timber direct to exporters and local mills.
