Halcyon Power Ltd, a 50/50 joint venture between Tūaropaki Trust and Obayashi Corporation of Japan, established the plant. Halcyon Power uses electricity generated by geothermal power to electrolyze water to produce ‘green hydrogen’. It will begin wholesaling hydrogen domestically but the ultimate aim is to complete a hydrogen supply chain that includes transportation, site storage and refuelling infrastructure. Geothermal, hydro and hydrogen are the three core sectors MB Century is currently focusing on. Recent projects completed by MB Century include drilling the wells for the Tauhara Power Station in Taupō for Contact Energy. Tauhara is a 168MW geothermal steam turbine power station, that will be Contact’s sixth geothermal power station in the area. Greg says the contract was undertaken in a unique approach between the four parties involved: Contact Energy, Halliburton, General Compression and MB Century. “Because it was such a long drilling campaign we had to get it right from the start so we undertook a culture review together to see how we could all leverage each other’s strengths rather than being four individual parties. You don’t often see that in the contracting space and it gave fantastic results. Getting the right output for the project saw less wells required than initially planned and we hit our target at a much earlier stage when drilling the wells. “There was very little non-productive time – less than 1% on the rig. It’s quite an expensive operation so having breakdowns and maintenance on the rig really low is another great achievement by the team,” says Greg. A new contract engagement was also undertaken with Genesis Energy on the Piripaua power station that is part of the Waikaremoana Power Scheme (138MW) in northern Hawke’s Bay. This saw MB Century involved from the outset of the project. “We hold a lot of knowledge from projects we have worked on in the past and know their machines well. So we leveraged that to help them scope and budget and plan a timeline for refurbishments. This gave them certainty on their pricing model and they could get a much fuller picture of what they would find during the refurbishment. “MB Century manufactured the stay vanes and undertook a complete refurbishment of the turbine. The result was that the client gained an additional 3% efficiency out of the machine or the equivalent to power 500 houses with electricity per year “That’s at the core of our strategy - being partners through developing new contracting models and delivering exceptional project outcomes for our clients.
