60 | Innovation at core of Stratmore MANUFACTURING Stratmore Construction Solutions Russell Fredric Stratmore is a leading manufacturer of concrete coatings, finishing and bonding products and systems which have been used on many major construction projects such as at the Masterton Aquatic Centre. Science and innovation coupled with a strong customer solutions focus have been foundational to the success of Lower Hutt company Stratmore Construction Solutions. Stratmore is a leading manufacturer of concrete coatings, finishing and bonding products and systems which have been used on many major construction projects throughout New Zealand during the past 65 years. Some Wellington examples include The Museum of New Zealand/Te Papa, Sky Stadium, Moa Point Sewage Treatment Plant and Clyde Quay Apartments as well as various motorway projects including overbridge supports and other applications. Stratmore’s products can be broadly classified into eight groups: liquid, repair and fabrication epoxies, coatings and repellents, precast and site chemicals such as curing, retarders and release agents, crystalline waterproofing systems, admixtures; waterstops and joint fillers, and fibre reinforcement systems. General Manager Adrian Woodliffe says their Managing Director John Stratmore has succinctly summed up what the company does: “Our products go into, on, or between concrete.” Stratmore’s extensive product range utilises the latest in research and best in raw materials and a large proportion of what it sells is manufactured at its Naenae factory, while the balance is made up of highly specialised products that are imported. The company is the New Zealand distributor for Canadian company Kryton International’s crystalline waterproofing systems. Kryton’s Krystol internal membrane (KIM) system is a unique crystal-forming concrete additive that provides long term protection by waterproofing the concrete and was used in the construction of Singapore’s famous Marina Bay Sands, Adrian says. “KIM was the sole waterproofing product that could address all the issues associated with such a mega-project built on reclaimed land and surrounded by seawater; it hasn’t leaked since it was completed in 2010.” Stratmore also has a distributor agreement with United States corporation FORTA for its concrete reinforcing fibre systems. There are two types of synthetic fibre, micro and macro, that go into the concrete when it is being mixed. Because the fibres lock together three dimensionally, steel reinforcing can sometimes be eliminated, subject to engineering and regulatory requirements. “In addition to the considerable added strength, this creates cost efficiencies as well as safety benefits.” Stratmore’s key competitors are well-known multi-national companies, but Adrian believes Stratmore has a strong competitive advantage due to its ability to provide quality products and up-to-date, one-on-one advice based on years of experience. “We are proud of the fact that we manufacture here in New Zealand and offer local support, specification input and consultation. “We are not order takers. There is good knowledge behind the supply of our products. The client goes away knowing that whatever the solution is, it is actually the right solution for them.” There have been significant advancements in the science and technology of products for the construction sector and there is increasing need to have highly efficient, highly durable, and more environmentally compatible structures. Stratmore engages consulting chemist and former staff member Dr Demetri Christoforou – PhD, BSc (Hons) – in the development of new products and to improve existing products. This includes an environmental and health focus to remove solvents and other harmful materials and is an ongoing commitment by Stratmore.
