| 67 DEVELOPMENT BRANZ: Campus Redevelopment The new fire laboratory has a floor plate that is about the size of half a rugby field and is 19.5m tall, meaning a three-storey building can be erected inside the laboratory. Outside the box is where Envelope likes to operate. This engineering and surveying business has been drawing outside the lines since 2015 when it started in a former egg factory turned apartment in Wellington. General Manager Mel Blyde describes the sta as a ‘crew’, and says communication, an open-door policy, and a real team ethic are at the heart of Envelope. ‘We totally know our stu . We have team members who have worked all over the world and bring that to the table but at the same time, we operate in an open way. We’re into open plan, open minds, and being totally open to new ideas.’ Envelope provides civil and structural engineering, surveying, land development and subdivision project management services. While the team has grown and changed, the values which anchored Envelope from the start have not. Working as a ‘tight team’, challenging, and supporting one another, as well as celebrating success, is key. Pushing the Envelope Some of their clients have been with Envelope since day one, and it is as exciting to work with them still as it is to take on new work, Mel says. So, consulting and contributing to the BRANZ redevelopment in Porirua was a great challenge, and a perfect it in terms of the need to innovate and look to the future. ‘We’re proud to be involved with BRANZ, and we’ve been working with them for over ive years now. We love supporting them, and their projects are supporting us to strive for the latest and greatest ways of doing our mahi. Kind of a win-win.’ She also says it’s also important for Envelope to be involved with, and engaged with, the community. And to ind and keep the balance between working hard, and time outside work. ‘We expect our team to work hard, but to keep the balance with an equal focus on their own mental and physical wellbeing, and that of their loved ones. We are all about raising your head to see the world around.’
