68 | BUILDING Chris Burns Construction: Tunawhakapeke North Ridge Development Karen Phelps Village taking shape at North Ridge The Tunawhakapeke development will deliver 72 homes – a mix of duplexes and stand alone houses - to the market over three stages. Burns Construction is proud to be working on Tunawhakapeke urban village in North Ridge, Rototuna, Hamilton. As head contractor, Burns Construction has done more than the norm for a building company with capital director Chris Burns at the helm of the development masterplan and house designs, working in conjunction with other trusted and experienced professionals. “The aim was to produce something that flowed really well because it’s a tricky site with different angles,” says Chris. “Being involved in the whole process I had the opportunity to ensure the subdivision reflected the houses I wanted to build so the sites were designed in a way that would result in quality outcomes and great homes.” The subdivision was given the name Tunawhakapeke from Ngāti Wairere and reflects the cultural importance of the surrounding area. It will deliver 72 homes – a mix of duplexes and stand alone houses - to the market over three stages and Chris says huge effort has been put into the design. “As housing gets denser we need to do a better job at design to fit more homes on smaller sites. It’s about making sure we deliver a great outcome for the people living there. Tunawhakapeke is a community of quality built homes that each provide their own unique spark to the area.” Stage one of Tunawhakapeke, comprising seven duplexes and five stand-alone houses is nearing completion. The two level duplexes offer three to four bedrooms and two to three bathrooms spread over 180-220sqm with either a double or single garage. There are outdoor living spaces on the ground floor. The stand-alone homes offer 150-230sqm, three to four bedrooms and two to three bathrooms. Homes are clad in a variety of materials - brick, cedar, board and batten and weatherboard – to ensure each home looks unique while still ensuring cohesion. Upmarket interiors, including feature walls and hand picked fittings from quality suppliers, set the homes apart in the marketplace. Chris says that Tunawhakapeke brings the community together through communal areas, walkways, and a community garden. “Tunawhakapeke is a subdivision that reflects the strong history of the surrounding area. We are creating a sense of community through building shared spaces and low fences while also ensuring a sense of privacy. “The well thought out homes mean people can live comfortably in functional spaces while having easy access to local amenities, education and transport.” The properties are being sold as spec homes, which make it easier for people to finance and also means better outcomes for the buyer as they can see what they are getting as opposed to buying off plan, says Chris. He says with Rototuna coming to the end of its growth Tunawhakapeke is a great opportunity for people to secure a new home in this desirable area. Tunawhakapeke is very close to the new city centre and the shopping centre, which are both in the pipeline. Burns Construction was founded by Chris’ grandfather WM Burns in 1964. His dad Alex subsequently took over and, after studying engineering at University, Chris joined the company in 2006 as an apprentice and purchased the company in 2017.
