70 | BUILDING Dougan Homes Kelly Deeks Helping foster the next generation Based in Napier and working throughout the Hawke’s Bay, Kane has been running Dougan Homes since 2017. Hawke’s Bay Master Builder Dougan Homes is creating dream career paths as well as dream homes, with builder Harjinder Singh named as one of the top three apprentices from the Central North Island East Coast/Hawke’s Bay region at the 2022 Registered Master Builders Apprentice of the Year competition. His boss, Kane Dougan, reckons it’s important to let apprentices learn from their mistakes. “I’m watching them, but I’m letting them think for themselves instead of telling them how I would do it, ” Kane says. “Everyone has a different way of building that works best for them, and that’s the way they can find it.” Based in Napier and working throughout the Hawke’s Bay, Kane has been running Dougan Homes since 2017, having started his career in the building industry in 2009. Kane has grown his business from labour only to full contract work, providing clients with a personal hands-on approach, a simple four step process to construction, and a team of qualified, passionate builders who are dedicated to quality craftsmanship. Kane gained some valuable experience building in London prior to starting Dougan Homes, where he did a lot of work on high end basement and loft extension projects. “There is no land there to build on, so you build up and down,” he says. “Some of these projects were really high end, one was a three storey basement and loft extension worth £35 million. “The skills I learned in London are transferable to building in New Zealand, and the quality of finish has been carried through to all the work we do today.” Kane says Harjinder is passionate about building and his rigorous research was more than apparent through the competition. “He learned quickly. “The judges were really happy with him and they could tell he knew what he was talking about. “He would always try to understand why he was doing something. If you’re just putting a bit of timber into a wall because your boss has told you to, you’re probably not going to remember how to do it next time. He wants to know why he’s doing something and understand the bigger picture.” Harjinder and Dougan Homes presented to the judges a new build three-bedroom home finished to a high standard, a project which he pretty well managed from start to finish, with Kane’s guidance on the build process. “He answered questions confidently and showed an excellent understanding of all topics covered. Judges said its was onwards and upwards for Harjinder, who would be a great asset to the building industry.” Harjinder is now running his own business, Tiwana Builders, and Kane hopes to see him contracting on his own job sites again soon. Dougan Homes is now looking forward to placing its first entry into the Registered Master Builders House of the Year competition next year. A renovation project where Dougan Homes has stripped out an entire house and rebuilt it is a great example of the high-end feel and finish that Dougan Homes brings to all of its projects.
