72 | Versatile New Plymouth BUILDING Kelly Deeks Service, quality and the Versatile style Versatile New Plymouth’s show home demonstrates that Versatile plans can work for anyone. For the past seven years, Versatile has been named Reader’s Digest Most Trusted Brand for garages and sleepouts, and even in these unprecedented times, is proud to have held on to the title again this year. Versatile New Plymouth owner Maree Gush says Versatile is a company underpinned by family values and a good old-fashioned Kiwi way of doing business. “For more than 40 years, Versatile has been building quality homes, garages, sleepouts, and farm buildings right around New Zealand,” she says. “Trust is so important in the construction industry, and to be able to maintain our Trusted Brand status while we are going through a building boom and supply chain issues is pretty incredible.” The Versatile method has been refined over the past 50 years as the company uses its knowledge and experience to make building as easy as possible for its clients. In recent times, transparency has been key to maintaining that trusting relationship. “We are presenting every option and giving our clients as much information as we can, making sure they know exactly what’s going on and can make the best decision for what they want to achieve with their building project.” Versatile’s main point of difference is its service. As a one-stop-shop, clients only have to deal with Versatile which takes care of all the building consents and subtrades, working towards the ultimate goal of making the whole experience easy and pleasant for customers. The local market in New Plymouth has shifted considerably in the past two years, especially in Versatile’s outbuildings range. Prior to Covid lockdowns, smaller single and double garages were the usual choice with an average size of 6mx6m. Today’s customers are seeking more livable space outside of their home, opting for a 9mx6m garage, with room for two cars and also a sleepout. “After being locked down, people have decided there isn’t enough room at home and they want more space,” Maree says. “ On the flip side, trends in the housing market are heading in the opposite direction. “There seems to be a shift now from large scale homes to medium scale homes, purely because of the pricing. “On top of rising construction costs, there are issues with land availability, so we have people choosing smaller homes and building on the back of existing sections.” Versatile New Plymouth’s new show home on Nukuroa Close in Waitara is meeting the current market trends with a two-bedroom, 98sqm home with single garage and decking on a 350sqm section. “Sections today, when they do become available, are smaller than they used to be at about 400sqm to 500sqm. “ With our new show home from our Metro range, we wanted to show what it was possible to achieve on a smaller section,” says Maree. Staying true to the standard plan with minor adjustments, Versatile New Plymouth’s show home demonstrates that Versatile plans can work for anyone without having to modify much, or anything at all.
