RS Design and Build BUILDING to page 78 In 2016 when Ross Weal came back from 10 years in Australia aged 34 he hadn’t anticipated that he would soon join his younger brother Simon in setting up their Hamilton business, RS Design and Build. A licensed building practitioner (LBP) with several years of construction experience behind him, Simon was not long home from Germany himself, while Ross’s years of experience working for himself brought in the necessary business expertise. It was always the plan for Ross to help Simon on site so it made sense for him to do his building apprenticeship which he did over the following three years. That brought the practical hands-on knowledge to back up his previous, equally useful, experience. In his downtime while studying at Waikato University, Ross had worked as a draftsman for engineering and architecture firm Stiles & Hooker. “They basically trained me as a draftsman for two years when I worked there. I learned a lot about drawings, so I draw all our plans now,” says Ross. Typically those plans are for character home renovations, and while some are lower, their budgets trend between $100,000 and $500,000, above which they tip into the architectural market. Although they have done the occasional new build RS Design and Build finds the renovation work particularly rewarding.
