80 | Sentinel Homes - Taranaki BUILDING Karen Phelps Award-winning showhome stands out The award winning show includes pitched ceilings in the kitchen leading to a pitched covered outdoor area complete with garapa wood deck A passion for design and construction has seen the owners of Sentinel Homes Taranaki take the franchise from strength to strength. The focus for Andrew and Julia Kuriger is design and build projects, producing bespoke beautiful houses that people love to live in. “We offer clients thoughtfully designed homes for their lifestyle and site because ultimately we believe that’s what makes people thrilled with their home,” says Andrew. The couple bring untold experience to the process and importantly have built three homes for themselves so know the full spectrum of feelings associated with building a home. “Because of this we truly believe it is possible to enjoy building enough to choose to do it again and again,” says Andrew. “I for one love the process and I love to share that with our clients ensuring their build is stress-free and enjoyable.” He says it’s all about building strong relationships, understanding the client and their needs. While some people want a hands off approach to their build and others want to be closely involved. “We make a real effort to be clear in our communication so everything is transparent. It’s about being honest and upfront – if a client’s brief and their budget don’t match I’ll tell them. It’s better they know at the start rather than have a nasty surprise partway through their build.” Andrew has 25 years of industry experience as a designer and project manager. He began his career working for some of the best architects in New Plymouth before launching his own architectural practice specialising in residential new builds and renovations. A move to London saw his career take a shift into project management where he oversaw the design, development and installation of urban greening and vertical living-walls in greater London and the United Kingdom. Back in New Zealand Andrew was instrumental in the expansion of a growing pre-cast concrete company. He worked with some of the largest construction companies in New Zealand on various civil, commercial and residential projects around the North Island, project-managing, overseeing quality management and heading up the design and drafting processes. Julia’s passion has always been people, having worked in the social services and notfor-profits sector for 22 years. Working in both New Plymouth and London she used her skills in event planning and project co-ordination to help start up, support and oversee a number of professional and charitable projects. Her expertise is invaluable in ensuring that Sentinel Homes Taranaki clients’ builds run smoothly. Importantly Andrew and Julia are both Taranaki born and bred and have a real passion for the region. They know it’s a great place to live and love helping people to build homes that enable them to live the Taranaki lifestyle to the full.
