The talented team at Wellington’s Well Hung Joinery have once again demonstrated they are masters of their craft, winning two awards for two very different and unique projects at the 2022 Master Joiners awards, convened recently in Blenheim. The second year in a row that Well Hung Joinery has been successful, this year the company won the Best Use of Creative Lighting at the National level, for an intricate light surround crafted from matai timber. Another timber joinery project was entered into the Best Use of Imported Timber and Best Compliant Timber Joinery categories. While unsuccessful at the National awards, that project went on to win the Best Wellington Regional award for these categories. Senior Manager Stephen Fairbrass says that every year he selects specific projects that standout and appeal to the award categories. This year, the light surround project and the timber joinery project had all the hallmarks of being very special. “For the light surround project, lighting architect Diego Imarzabal, supplied the LED pendant lighting to go over a kitchen bench and asked if we could design and build a matai surround to cover this pendant. “We had already built the kitchen for this home. Diego showed us some photos of a similar, but quite plain light fitting as a guide as to what he wanted. “We drew up the design on our Kitchen CAD software and, after several attempts to cut it out, we were successful in using our CNC to cut the slots into dressed matai timber.” While the lighting surround is effectively a rectangular box that fits around the pendant light, what made the piece quite unique is the way the light slots are cut into the timber, each positioned at random intervals, widths and lengths. “It’s a very arty, one-off bespoke piece that required quite a bit of intricate skill and talent to craft it,” says Stephen. “It’s quite unique. It’s also made out of beautiful native timber, finished very well and ties in with the kitchen floor that is matai, and we brought some matai into the kitchen as well.” The timber joinery project was detailed and specified by a local architect for an extension to a Wellington home. “The client requested rosewood timber to be used for all timber joinery, including the internal architraves and skirtings and exterior windows, a new triple sliding door and a double sliding door. “It’s quite unique. It’s also made out of beautiful native timber, finished very well and ties in with the kitchen floor that is matai, and we brought some matai into the kitchen as well.” “The use of rosewood made the project quite unique because it’s a timber that we do not use very often. “Typically, timber joinery is painted on the outside, but this was left in its natural state and coated in some oil. It was quite unique in that sense. The finished result looked so rich and beautiful, showcasing the true beauty of timber joinery in its raw state.” Stephen says that to have won these prestigious industry awards is a significant achievement for the business and the team, and affirmation of the top-quality work they consistently produce. “The team is very proud of the work we do and to have won these awards means we have received recognition for the hard work and talent we have here. “We’re very ‘details’ orientated, with a particular focus on making new joinery match existing joinery in older homes.” Well Hung Joinery has a long history providing quality craftmanship, and is one of the largest timber joinery and kitchen companies in Wellington. “We’re very much a bespoke company, specialising in timber joinery, kitchens and cabinetry, working with whatever timber we’re asked to use, and matching into existing windows and joinery. “Wellington has many very beautiful old homes and so the joinery we make is crafted to match existing joinery in the house, so that it looks original. “That is our specialty.”
