Masterton based joinery company Workshop Designs is set to move into brand new custom-built premises. It’s the fulfilment of a long-term dream held by company owners Phoebe and Will Clinton-Baker. “We used to visit showrooms in our weekends dreaming we would have one ourselves one day,” says Phoebe. “It will be an incredible space for people to visit and touch and try out products. “ It will offer full functional kitchens, a bathroom and laundry so people can see appliances and products in action. “We aim for the space to become an inspiring space where people can collaborate and showcase their own products. We will have information evenings and also cooking demonstrations so the space will move beyond just joinery.” As Workshop Designs always installs all its own products in order to ensure a high quality end result, the showroom will also showcase this capability. The company office space will serve a practical purpose but also reveal the custom-made desks and office furniture Workshop Designs can produce. “We aim for the space to become an inspiring space where people can collaborate and showcase their own products.” Workshop Designs (the name was suggested by their son) had its beginnings when Will, a builder by trade, was increasingly in demand for his joinery work. Phoebe had initially trained as a chef so added her expertise to the mix. Building by day, gradually the cabinetry side of their business took over. It was further kick started by the pandemic, which saw people increasingly invest in their home spaces. Workshop Designs manufactures any kind of joinery for the home or commercial space including wardrobes, bookshelves, custom tables and outdoor kitchens. The couple employs a team of three full time joiners, a project coordinator and a kitchen designer. Phoebe undertakes design and is currently working towards her National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA) kitchen design qualification. The company won a 2021 NKBA Best Kitchen Award for the Wellington region for a project in a renovated 1970s home. The owner wanted to keep the original u-shaped layout and wallpaper in the kitchen and Workshop Designs maximised the space with a modern kitchen that still pays homage to the era of the home. Benchtop and splashback was produced in the Dekton product, a Spanish stone heat-rated product, and the veneer from VidaSpace in Levin was oiled in-house to give a beautiful rich warm palette that reflected tones from the wallpaper. Phoebe says the project is indicative of the Workshop Designs approach: “We bring a young, fresh bespoke approach and the connection between design and joinery is super important to us. “Our team work with clients who know exactly what they want or need direction to make their custom joinery dream a reality. By doing so, we create a seamless client engagement model to ensure they are involved from start to finish. Because we handcraft everything in-house we can explain our vision to our joiners for a particular job, breaking down detail to come up with the best solution without compromising on quality or design.” Workshop Designs is a proud finalist in the Wairarapa Awards. It can undertake projects New Zealand wide depending on the job. The new Workshop Designs facility is located in the Poplars Industrial Park in Masterton and is earmarked for completion mid 2023.
