It means we’re in control of all the moving parts and can plan well ahead on new projects, just as we did with the new village underway in Lower Hutt, Boulcott Village,” says Dean. Typical of its villages thorough planning has gone into creating a site specific community which sits well in its surrounds and with a golf course bordering one side of the village, units and apartments as well as shared community facilities, have been positioned to capture the best views of this expansive open green space. With in-house planning and design teams Dean says Summerset has evolved into a very nimble reactive organisation, able to quickly pull all elements around a planned village down on to paper and into the ground. Village design is very much about gaining insight and feedback from residents at other villages. Dean says this means villages are designed around a vision of continual enhancement of resident experiences. “We like to talk about a continuum of care, so that residents know there are prepared options for them on the same site as they age and need additional care and support.” Part of the consenting to build Boulcott Village was around the civil works and particularly water reticulation. This required Summerset Group Holdings to construct a significant pump station to put onto the site. “The water upgrade is not just for our site. It has future-proofed reliable water supply and management for the wider community.” And because of its pristine location adjacent to Lower Hutt Golf Course, Dean says a great deal of due-diligence went into integrating that beautiful open space to feel very much a part of the Boulcott Village community. Social and recreational spaces have been situated on the site to embrace its neighbour and for residents to enjoy the outlook. Summerset is progressing well for the first residents to move into their new homes next year. It will be home to a variety of residential building types and approximately 300 residents. There will be a mix of villas, apartments, cottages and serviced apartments along with a dedicated care centre to meet a range of care needs. The memory care centre will blend enabling architecture with the latest design technologies to help those living there live a full and positive life. “We are very much about meeting needs and a great resident experience. A great deal of careful planning has gone into every decision made around our village.” And Lower Hutt is not the only Wellington region to be looking forward to a new Summerset community. A village at Kenepuru in Porirua is nearing full completion, and development is underway at Waikanae on the Kapiti Coast. Two new villages have opened in other locations in Whangarei and Cambridge. While Dean acknowledges being part of the construction sector isn’t for the faint hearted, he says Summerset plans very well to execute a healthy landbank and deliver fantastic villages. “We are certainly in a very positive position as there will be undoubtedly more demand for the special environments we create for residents to enjoy.”
