A large gymnasium connects to the dining/ covered court area. The size of two basketball courts, the gymnasium is fitted with high-quality sports flooring and 1000 lux lighting to enable film coverage. Changing rooms and toilets are at one end of the gymnasium, while the other end houses a small staff administration area. Referred to as the Learning Street, a large rectangular classroom building measuring 100 metres long by 20 metres wide connects from the other buildings. “A centre walkway runs lengthways down the middle of Learning Street with classrooms and technical learning spaces coming off each side,” explains Tom. “Some of the technical spaces include robotics, art, science, food tech combined with a commercial kitchen. One of the features of Manukura is the extensive use of glass so that there is transparency in the learning spaces at all times. “When you walk down the 100-metre walkway, the wall and doors are all glass.” Halfway down the Learning Street, the centre walkway widens and opens into a collaboration space complete with performing arts stage. “That space can open up to the outside where there is a large covered ceremonial entrance. There will be cultural adornment in that collaboration space, with two pou at the ceremonial entrance, adorned in a contemporary style and signifying both the historical and cultural narrative pertaining to Manukura. There are also some laminated timber structures that are quite special. There is one gable end structure at the main entrance, another at the gable end of the ceremonial entrance and there are laminated timber beams supporting the covered court.” Landscaping includes court spaces, gardens, parking, and connecting footpaths. Two rugby fields are built to a high standard with irrigation and lighting. The construction contract commenced early September 2022 and Tom says the project has gone very well with the flooring now going down in the gym, and lining being finished in the Learning Street. Work on the grassed playing field and other landscaping is in progress. “The relationship with all stakeholders has been really great and we have made some friends at Manukura. “Throughout the project we have worked closely with the Ministry of Education and their project manager The Building Intelligence Group.” Tom acknowledges that Manukura was a significant undertaking for Maycroft but says a collaborative style of team work, coupled with being experienced practitioners in both design through its relationships with external design consultants, and in construction pertaining to Manukura methodology has resulted in a successful project. “We also bring enthusiasm and commitment to succeed and we work hard to enhance our relationships with customers and consulting teams. It has really been a team work focus built on trust and cooperation.” With its origins stemming back to the 1950s in the Wellington region, Maycroft has continued to evolve and thrive through the decades, and now has its main office in Petone, with a branch in Palmerston North, giving it a reach throughout the wider Wellington and Manawatu regions. “Central government departments like the Ministry of Education and Kaianga Ora are key clients of ours, and we also work for local councils, and developers. Our projects include commercial buildings, Care Homes, medium density housing, refurbishments.”
