Originally a construction company, the firm has expanded its capabilities to encompass civil works, fencing, maintenance, real estate, and development, making it a versatile and dynamic presence in the region’s construction and development sector. Nexus’s growth is particularly remarkable. In just one year the team has expanded from eight to 25 members. Nexus was started by a group of friends: real estate investor developers Robbie Venture and Josh Crozier and experienced Master Builder Jared Danes. Their initial business model involved purchasing properties, subdividing them, renovating existing homes, and either selling the sections or constructing new houses. However, the company’s trajectory took an unexpected turn as market conditions evolved. “The real estate market took a downturn and we were very aware of the real need for state housing and the urgency it required,” explains Russ Engelke, Nexus’s chief operations officer. “As a team, we felt that this was an area where we could get involved and add value.” This led to a significant Kainga Ora project, the Southampton Street development in Hastings. A design and build project, Nexus collaborated with Simply Architecture to deliver the three double-story, three-bedroom units, each encompassing around 120 square metres. The project aims for a six-star Homestar rating incorporating features such as heat pumps, heaters in every room and high R-values in walls, underfloors and ceilings. Russ says that Cyclone Gabrielle caused unforeseen delays and setbacks including issues with product supply. Despite this the project is around 80% complete and on schedule for delivery in December. He says the successful completion of the Southampton Street development underscores Nexus’s ability to work collaboratively with clients and adapt to unexpected circumstances. Nexus’ core services encompass new builds, development management, renovations, interior consulting, alterations, fences, minor dwellings, excavation, pergolas and concrete drives and patios. This comprehensive suite of services allows Nexus to cater to the diverse needs of clients, providing tailored solutions and delivering exceptional results, says Russ. In addition to the Southampton Street project, Nexus has a variety of other on-going initiatives. Currently, a subdivision is underway in Hastings, where Nexus will build two spec homes and renovate an existing home on the site. It is also engaged in various home extension projects and exploring opportunities for large subdivisions in Napier and Hastings and discussions with property owners regarding land purchase and joint ventures. Russ says Nexus is different in that it invests a percentage of its profits in local and overseas charitable initiatives and work with organizations actively involved in community development. For example in Durban, South Africa it has helped after floods working with local communities to restore safe drinking water. In Uganda it has undertaken similar projects to ensure supply of safe and clean drinking water. In Uganda and Kenya it has helped teach skills, particularly to young women, so they can work to provide for themselves and their families. In New Zealand Nexus ahs supported Nourished for Nil, which is helping to feed thousands of local people by rescuing surplus food that is good enough to eat but no longer good enough to sell and redistribute within communities. “At Nexus it’s not just about going to work; it’s about how we can serve better in the place we’ve chosen to be. Nexus’s vision is a mission to ‘build responsibly for a brighter future’. Looking ahead, Russ says that Nexus envisions continuing to invest in local and overseas communities, exploring opportunities in property holding to ensure it can continue to invest in causes that matter and expanding the team.
