32 | Taranaki: Livingstone Building NZ REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT Laser Plumbing New Plymouth newplymouth@laserplumbing.co.nz | www.laserplumbing.co.nz 06 758 5424 New civic centre on track in Hāwera The centre is being constructed by Livingston Building, which places strong emphasis on using local subcontractors and suppliers. T T from page 30 Warren & Mahoney designed the 1605m2 facility taking cues from the region’s rural heritage. The architecture integrates a sawtooth roof design, paying homage to many of the old dairy factories around district that were built with a similar style roof line, while allowing copious natural light to infuse the building. The use of floor-to-ceiling glazing enhances this effect, coupled with solar panels for energy efficiency. There are many other distinctive elements of the centre including a maunga-inspired structure in the children’s library, alongside a sunken seating area reminiscent of caves around Mount Taranaki, which seeks to create an inviting, culturally resonant space for learning and engagement. “The idea is for the building to be iconic, in terms of its modernity, while not overpowering the heritage buildings that surrounds it,” says Phil. A major aim of the project is that the centre will act as a harbinger of change in the city centre, driving economic activity and attracting investment. By effectively combining a number of facilities onto one site, and providing people with a wide-range of services, information, cultural and educational resources right in the heart of Hāwera, the vision is that the centre will bring much needed foot traffic and visitors to the town centre. Gerard says it will also be a catalyst for driving change, which will create new vibrancy, create jobs, economic stimulus and improved connectivity for both the South Taranaki community and for visitors to the district. The broader impact of Te Ramanui o Ruapūtahanga on Hāwera is already palpable. The centre stands as a cornerstone in the town’s redevelopment strategy and has triggered a ripple effect reflected in the on-going restoration of a nearby heritage building by local investors. Funding from external sources, including the government’s Shovel Ready Projects Fund and the Toi Foundation, has been instrumental in realising this ambitious project. Additionally, the Council’s astute financial strategy, drawing from the Long Term Investment Fund, ensures there will be no direct impact on local rates to fund the construction. The Centre is being constructed by Livingston Building, which places strong emphasis on using local subcontractors and suppliers and many South Taranaki businesses are working on the project. As it nears completion, the excitement and optimism in Hāwera are palpable, says Phil, underscoring the significant impact Te Ramanui o Ruapūtahanga is poised to make. “Te Ramanui o Ruapūtahanga represents not just a building, but a convergence of culture, education, and progress. Its significance goes beyond its physical presence; it embodies the collective spirit and aspirations of the community. “The unique features and design elements aim to create a space that is not just functional but deeply meaningful and representative of our local heritage and aspirations for the future.” EXCEL TARANAKI LTD Free Phone: 0800 392 351 | Office: 06 278 3002 Email: tkoffice@excel.co.nz www.excel.co.nz COMMERCIAL & INDUSTRIAL REFRIGERATION & HVAC ENGINEERS
