Led by business owner Jason Alder, the company has evolved into a one-stop shop for developers seeking expertise in subdivisions, drainage, earthworks and demolition. “What sets us apart is our ability to offer a complete package,” says Jason. “We handle everything from earthworks and retaining walls to drainage and roading. Clients can engage us and trust us to manage the entire project, ensuring it’s completed seamlessly. We act as a single point of contact, eliminating the need for multiple subcontractors. This streamlined approach results in better communication, faster resolution of issues and ultimately, a smoother project.”” Its team of approximately 30 experienced staff, who bring their expertise to each project, underpins Wellington Contracting’s success. Jason recognises the importance of attracting and retaining skilled staff in a competitive industry. The company invests in high-quality equipment and offers a career path for its employees. “We bring people up in the company and train them in the right methods to ensure a quality job. It benefits both them and the company. They learn, grow, and develop, and the company benefits from having great staff—a win-win scenario.” Investing in top-notch plant and equipment is another area where Wellington Contracting excels. It favours Hitachi excavators for 13-tonne diggers and larger equipment, while smaller gear is generally the Yanmar brand. The company’s inventory includes excavators, diggers, front-end loaders, rollers, trucks, trailers, and transporters. This strategic investment in equipment allows Wellington Contracting to maintain control over every aspect of a project, from start to finish, says Jason. The company’s commitment to quality assurance documentation and health and safety also places it at the forefront of the industry. WCL holds the ISO accreditation, it is a Toitika listed supplier, +Impac Prequal qualified and holds SiteWise Gold. The company is also a member of Civil Contractors New Zealand. Wellington Contracting works on projects in the wider Wellington region. A recently completed project was the successful handover of an Urban Plus job in Waterloo, Lower Hutt. This project included the construction of 21 lots, complete with a 20,000-litre underground sewer pump station. “What made this project particularly challenging was the high water table at a depth of one metre,” says Jason, “and the need to excavate as deep as four metres necessitating constant dewatering. The project was also executed through the challenging winter months, yet it was delivered on time and within budget.” He considers the Urban Plus project as a testament to Wellington Contracting’s commitment to excellence. The scope of services provided included earthworks, underground services and drainage, housing pad preparation, and roading. Approximately 400 square metres of concrete were laid for the road, showcasing Wellington Contracting’s ability to handle diverse requirements. In addition to large-scale projects like the Urban Plus development, Wellington Contracting has also demonstrated its expertise in other areas, for example a 1500-square-metre car park for a church in Park Avenue, Lower Hutt, which involved not only the construction of the car park but also drainage for surface water and asphalt resurfacing. The project also incorporated lighting design and the installation of basketball hoops. It has also had a long-standing relationship with Palmer & Cook Developments over a variety of projects in recent years.
