Jackson Architects haymanqs.co.nz 06 765 8322 info@mikechilds.co.nz Jackson Architects has deep roots in New Plymouth and a reputation for excellence in architectural design that both looks good on site and functions well, respecting both people and the environment. Originally formed by architect Bill Jackson in 2000, the practice is now owned by Scott Ferguson, a next generation architect who shares Bill’s aspirational vision and is taking it forward into the future. Bill has had a big influence on Scott’s career, including the decision he made as a school leaver to study architecture at Unitec. “I’ve known Bill since childhood as his son was a schoolfriend of mine. I joined this practice in 2013 and then my wife Jenna and I bought the company in 2021. Bill then stayed on for a year before moving to Auckland to work as a project manager.” With wide experience on large luxury homes and other residential work, as well as on commercial, industrial, aged care and education projects, Jackson Architects offers a comprehensive skillset and a considered, responsive approach. Notable local design projects for the practice include New Plymouth’s Te Henui Chapel that saw an existing workshop facility skillfully reinterpreted as an elegant space for reflection and celebration. Built by Pepper Construction, the chapel won both a regional NZIA commercial design award in 2018, as well as a 2018 Registered Master Builders commercial project award. Jackson Architects’ innovative design flair is also evident at the Courtenay Business Park in downtown New Plymouth. This design project saw the former Taranaki Daily News building on the corner of Courtenay and Currie Streets partly demolished to make way for redevelopment as ground floor offices, storage and car parking across two levels and an elevated ‘Cedar Box’ encircled with a green outdoor area. Tenants in the completed business park include Bayleys, Becca and Manifold, (a community driven coworking enterprise). “It has been a great redevelopment of an old building that was no longer wanted and shows how you can work sustainably to reuse some of what is already there, rather than demolishing everything and starting from scratch.” An iconic heritage building on an adjoining site, formerly the CC Wards store, is also set to be strengthened and transformed. “That one is going through the process of consent at the moment.” In the residential sector, Jackson Architects has recently designed a beautiful luxury two-storey home for a local developer at Lake Okareka, currently under construction. “We have a great working relationship with the client, who first emailed us about this site in mid-April 2022. He came to me looking for a concept. Within three weeks, we had completed preliminary concepts and a model in Revit BIM software and it evolved from there.” Natural timber and stone cladding were selected to ensure this gorgeous four-bedroom, three-bathroom home with modern open plan kitchen, dining and lounge spaces would blend seamlessly with the surrounding landscape. Recessed sliding doors and floor to ceiling glazing in the open plan area ensure there are uninterrupted lake and mountain views. In Rotorua, Jackson Architects has designed a number of office buildings and, adopting a Chow Hill Architects concept, turned the planned Ebbett car dealership there into reality. Jackson Architects has excellent networks that include other local designers, builders and engineers, fueling a good pipeline of projects into 2024. ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN
