Makers of Architecture Co-Founder Jae Warrander says the annual Timber Design Awards provide the perfect opportunity to celebrate the hard work all designers, consultants and construction teams put into their projects. The design brief was to design a wine tasting room that enabled people to enjoy Ata Rangi’s wine and experience the brand, one of the oldest and most prestigious in Martinborough. Inspired by its surrounding natural and built environment, the Tasting Room’s striking dart shaped roof form rises up, supported by rhythmic timber posts and detailing — referencing the repetitive vines, significant tree trunks and light filtering canopies that share the site. “The dart shape is expressed on the outside, and the inside with a vaulted ceiling,” says Jae. “An elevated floor and large ten metre sectional glass sliders open up, connecting you to the rows of vines; the start of the wine making journey.” Sustainability sits at the heart of the Ata Rangi Tasting Room and a significant portion of the Lawson Cypress timber showcased throughout the tasting room was harvested from an Ata Rangi shelterbelt and used throughout for the interior flooring, exterior decking and interior joinery. “Trees are incredibly important to Clive, Ata Rangi’s co-founder. He actively grows many species for various purposes around the site. This project presented the opportunity for Clive’s Lawson Cyprus stand to be felled, dried and milled locally. This was compleHamish notes that 2023 has been a significant year of change for construction, with major regulatory change around town planning and the phasing in of more prescriptive building rules, as well as increased compliance requirements for building. “The process has become very complex. We have gone from coordinating one or two sub-consultants on a project to 10 or 15 covering everything from liquefaction and geotechnical risk assessments to engineers and service installers. ” Looking ahead, Hamish remains upbeat about the city’s future. “There is an awful lot to be positive about in Porirua.” mented by a selection of other sustainably harvested New Zealand timbers; Macrocarpa for the posts from Ruapehu Sawmill, and Abodo’s Tundra (Douglas Fir) weatherboard cladding. It was imperative to use healthy, non-treated, locally sourced sustainable solid timbers throughout. The interior is absolutely stunning, with an amazing expression of space and the timber provides a natural warm glow. We love using timber in our architecture, it provides a humbling and natural connection for people.” The Tasting Room also won an award at the 2023 Wellington NZIA awards, with the judges opening expression; simply ‘wow’. Founded by four architectural graduates from Victoria University, Makers of Architecture is now celebrating a decade in practice, and in that time has evolved from a team of four, to a design team of seven, along with its own construction team. “Two years into the business we established Makers Fabrication, a construction company to complement our architectural work. That business is based nearby in Seaview and has grown to a team of 30. “There’s also a factory there where a lot of timber components and elements included in our designs are fabricated, then delivered to site. Makers Fabrication also built the tasting room. While there are many efficiencies if Makers of Architecture’s clients avail themselves of Makers Fabrication, they are by no means obligated to.” Jae says the foundation behind Makers of Architecture is the creation of architectural designs and buildings in a more efficient way by harnessing the power of computer technology, and that has remained throughout the practices journey. “We specialise in tailored solutions for challenging projects, particularly in regard to very remote, isolated or hard to access locations.” wightaluminium.co.nz Ata Rangi Tasting Room, Martinborough Premium commercial façade solutions, aluminium doors and windows, that bring exceptional architectural design to life.
