Kate Whittaker, who founded the practice in 2007, has worked in architectural design for some three decades, mostly in the Taranaki, Wairarapa, Whanganui and Wellington regions. In Taranaki, her portfolio includes projects throughout the district, with a focus on New Plymouth, Ōakura and along the Surf Highway 45. She is both a licensed building practitioner and a member of Architectural Designers New Zealand (ADNZ). With the planning side becoming more complicated, having strong local partnerships is just so important. “I love being part of the local community here too. The slab is due to go down on this three-bedroom, two-living space home before Christmas. “It has been another great project to work on this year.” Ōakura is a gorgeous summer holiday spot with an enviable beach lifestyle. Kate Whittaker Design is responding to buoyant local demand for quality homes and home renovations and additions. “In addition to high end home demand, I am noticing quite a few people are wanting to add an additional smaller home to their existing site so as to accommodate extended family.” No matter what the project, Kate can take it through from the initial concept design to building consent. “Those initial consultations are really important and I like to discuss the concept plan with clients until we get it right. I will then submit those to the builder for a ballpark estimate on costs before progressing to the consenting stage.” While her practice is primarily housing focussed, Kate has also completed commercial project work. For example, she was involved with site set-up and services for the vibrant Quarter Bank container retail development in New Plymouth. “I’ve also just completed the design fit-out of an existing 1960s building as a health space to accommodate a growing medical practice.” For Kate, being a member ADNZ is a fulfilling and enriching aspect of her practice that enables her to continually develop her design knowledge and networks. “I feel privileged to be part of it. ADNZ provide many design webinars and discussion groups, and often host events for networking between members and industry partners like Resene. If I have a particular design challenge, I am able to ‘put it out ’to the wider ADNZ community for design collaboration.
