A coastal holiday home built by wellknown Wairarapa builders firm Dawes Contruction picked up a number of awards in this year’s Registered Master Builders House of the Year competition. The coastal Wairarapa holiday home – aptly named Coastal Dreaming was announced in the Top 100 House of the Year national awards. It also picked up the gold award in the Wellington Wairarapa region, along with two regional lifestyle awards, regional craftsmanship award, regional interior design award, regional outdoor living and the regional category winner in the new home $1.5 million - $2 million category. The owners of the coastal Wairarapa holiday home wanted a casual, relaxed bolthole that could cater for larger groups of family and friends. Designed by Wellington-based architects Parsonson Architects, Dawes Construction brought it to life with mid-century and Kiwi-bach leanings, as well as laidback luxury touches. The exterior of the home has cedar timber, concrete blocks and polycarbonate sheeting, in keeping with coastal New Zealand look. The internal design features timber with shades of sand and sea. The 194sqm split-level house stretches along the gently sloping site and takes in views of the Pacific Ocean. The lower part of the section is a large undercroft with space for car parking, games, equipment storage and a covered walkway leading to two guest bedrooms, a bunk room, bathroom and laundry. This part of the house can be closed off with sliding shutters. Upstairs has two more bedrooms and a living area with a balcony on one side and a courtyard with views through the house on the other. Masterton-based Dawes Construction was founded in 2002 by Marty Dawes and focusses on higher-end architecturally designed builds. The company covers the whole Wairarapa region, with new builds its core business. Marty takes on the project management for all his projects, saying it gave him complete control over how a build progresses. Having been in the industry for 40 years he brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the role. Dawes offers “the complete build package” for architecturally designed bespoke homes. There is a dedicated team of sub-contractors, and they can provide complete pricing package, being open with pricing and project programming. Marty has been in the building industry all his life, nearly 40 years, and says it is what he knows best. They are Registered Master builders, servicing the Greater Wairarapa district. Jobs have taken the team all over the Wairarapa, from a building a new home in Eketahuna to a cantilevered car deck at Ngawi, Cape Palliser. The team pride themselves on building relationships with clients, and as a result get a number of repeat callbacks. “At Dawes Construction we get a lot of satisfaction from completing outstanding projects to a high quality of workmanship,” Marty said. Marty puts the success of the company down to being choosey with the projects it takes on, mainly focusing on higher-end architecturally designed homes. The Registered Master Builders House of the Year competition is held annually across the country. All category entrants in each region are judged by the same panel of two judges, for example, a new home up to $500,000 in Wellington will be judged by the same two people that will judge all other categories in Wellington. The judges go through each property and decide on the score against the set criteria for its category.
