| 95 Kiwi Built Residential The magnificent two-storey villa at 81 Bolton St is 350sqm, complete with 100sqm garage and it has been far from a straight-forward build, but a very rewarding one to see come to fruition. BUILDING Wainui Joinery owners and directors are very proud of thework their teamhas done on thewindows and doors at 81 Bolton St, Kelburn, Wellington. This highly-unique build, which replicates the 1910-era, is being completed by the Kiwi Built Limited team, led by Corey Brown. “It’s been a real pleasure and privilege to workwith Corey and the architect, Callidus Architects owner Mona Kruse Hurnen. We’ve beenworkingwith Corey andMona for about ive years now,” owner-director NicolaWynne says. Fellowowner-director Kerry Richardson agrees, sayingMona is very speci ic onwhat shewants, “it’smy job to achieve it and althoughwe do get some tricky requests, we are yet to strike anything that we can’t achieve. We don’t often get towork on a heritage-type project that is a brand-new build and this is ‘a real home of distinction’. Not many joiners remain in that heritage space now, it’s becoming quite niche. Being able to generate and duplicate a heritage style takes a lot of time, e ort and knowledge. It’s been awonderful job and Corey andMona are great toworkwith. They are very professional and really passionate about what they do.” Wainui Joinery also does all kinds of cabinetry and stairs, but for this job theywere contacted to focus on the ornate doors and windows – including all the internal doors. “There aremany curved and angled Recreating a classic double glazed units, done in a style that isn’t often seen let alone fabricated anymore. It’s really detailed and time-consumingwork – you need a team who really knowwhat they are doing,” fellow owner-director John Raynor says. With a proud 63-year history, Wainui Joinery hand-make everything in-factory and do not outsource any of thework except for themanufacturing of the glass itself. The teamof 13 all worked in collaboration on this, led by Kerry Richardsonwhoworked with Corey onsite towork out the construction details and drawings. “We started the exterior in November 2021 and the job is very close to being complete now, so it’s been a long term project,” Nicola says. Demand for high quality joinery is always there, but traditionally the team is busier in the summer. “We have a large number of builders who come to us, sowe always have a steady streamof work, and are always looking for more!” Wainui Joinery has three apprentices at themoment, learning the trade from their eight highly experienced and greatly valued senior joiners at its workshop in Wainuiomata, Lower Hutt. Most jobs are inWellington and thewider Wellington region and the team is skilled at bothmodern and heritage joinery, which gives themgreat lexibility and the ability to work on all types of homes.
