110 | BUILDING “We have the expertise to deliver outcomes across a whole range of projects small and large, complex and noncomplex , so there’s plenty of variety to keep the crews engaged and challenged.” Staying agile and solutions-focussed Currie Construction involves itself in a wide array of projects from footpaths, geotechnical work, roading infrastructure development, concrete pumping, slip repairs, installation of culverts, retaining walls, concrete works and playground or landscaping work. Craig Shearar is a Contracts Manager for Gisborne-based Currie Construction, a family-owned business which prides itself on being agile and solutions-focussed in the sectors the company operates in. There are two main divisions to the business, concentrating on vertical construction in the commercial space and providing civil works resources and expertise. With a proud history, founded 38 years ago by Kim and Debbie Currie, today the company sits at a team of 80+ staff. In 2012, the next generation in the family, sons John and Sam, took over its daily operation, with John taking care of the commercial construction operations and Sam, concentrating on civil projects. “There are two of us involved in pricing jobs, one on the construction side, one on the civils and its fair to say that over the last six months or so things have been fairly tight but seem to be improving with more coming to market for pricing. During the harder times we adjusted to the market by getting involved in projects of various sizes.” In the Civil works arena, Currie Construction involves itself in a wide array of projects from footpaths, geotechnical work, roading infrastructure development, concrete pumping, slip repairs, installation of culverts, retaining walls, concrete works and playground or landscaping work. “That’s one of the things that’s great about what we do. We have the expertise to deliver outcomes across a whole range of projects small and large, complex and non-complex , so there’s plenty of variety to keep the crews engaged and challenged.” A very special project Currie Construction has been proud to be associated with is construction of the 1000 year walkway connecting Tītīrangi/Kaiti Hill and Puhi Kai Iti/Cook Landing site. Shaped to depict a waka, with a Te Maro viewing platform, the bridge extends 6.3 metres above Kaiti Beach Road. “It will provide views of Turanganui-a-Kiwa, where navigators arrived here by canoe, waka and ship over the past 1000 years and we’re delighted to be involved in such an iconic and meaningful project for this region.” The project had been in the pipline for six years as part of the Tairāwhiti Navigations Project and was initially planned for hte Tuia 250 commemorations. When completed the bridge will link tracks on the maunga to walkways around the Inner Harbour, leading to walkways and cycleways to Kaiti and Wainui or to Kiwa Pools and the town beaches. Currie Construction T T Sue Russell “It was delayed through the Covid-19 years and cyclones so its wonderful this has finally begun construction. On the 9th September we craned in and lifted the actual bridge structure and by the end of September it will be completed. The work crews and local Iwi have had a karakia service so it really feels like it isn’t far away from being completed and will be a wonderful asset for all to enjoy.” Currie Construction has been involved in many cyclone related repair projects, with a substantial spends by local Council, NZTA, the Ministry of Education. “We’ve done significant work in schools, repairing water damage. From an infrastructure perspective, there is still a long way to go.” As a well-known construction entity in Gisborne, Currie Construction has been presented with a wonderful opportunity, in partnership with MSD and Vertical Horizons, a local training company, offering young people the chance to gain Level 2 Infrastructure qualifications and a gateway into a career in the civil construction field. The 12-week programme means that those chosen to enter the training will be partnered by Currie Construction employees also undertaking the learning. “The trainees will have 8 days in the classroom and the rest of the time will be out on sites. We jump at the chance to be involved in projects like this as it gives us a chance to find and embed new staff in our industry and to be of service in the community.” As a family-based business Currie Construction felt the best way to offer those new to the sector with the best experiences was to place the MSD trainees with a group of their own employees on the same learning path to partner them through the process. 027 366 0024 steph@afthompson.co.nz . . • Hiab • Class 1 & 2 Pilots • 40ft Flat-Deck Trailer • Machinery Storage • 1-100 Ton Machinery Transport YOUR HEAVY HAULAGE SPECIALISTS Proudly Supporting Currie Construction 06 867 7771 | admin@electrinet.nz Your local specialists in • Power • Domestic and Commercial Electrical • Plumbing • Gas • Aircon • Refrigeration • Drainlaying • Fire Protection • Data and Comms Whether you are operating single or multiple sites, NSB is equipped to supply the maintenance plan, the coatings you need, as well as ongoing advice and support to help you optimise your coating’s life.
