| 111 BUILDING Apprentice with a wide range of skills Morison Building takes on a wide variety of projects from around the region. Morison Building’s first new build was a 190 square metre home on a two acre property. Matt Morison was described by the judges of the 2018 Hawke’s Bay East Coast Registered Master Builders Apprentice of the Year as an outstanding young man who capably demonstrated his wide range of skills. At the construction firm where he completed his apprenticeship, he came to enjoy eventually having responsibility for an apprentice and running job sites, however without the option of progressing further he looked to taking control of his future. “I’m fairly passionate about building, the main thing being that you’re never in the same place doing the same thing. I like the variety of tasks, problem solving and being creative. Also it’s visually rewarding” It was against this background that Matt started Waipukurau-based Morison Building in 2020 and now, aged 28, has never looked back. Within six months he had a full-time employee, followed by two more. “It just kind of took off really.” With a growing workload and his mother being an accountant, having good systems in place starting with the Xero accounting package followed by Xero project management software has been a huge asset. Matt describes Morison Building’s approach as “particular and pedantic.” “Our slogan is building dreams with care and quality. It’s about training our builders to do good quality work and to care, because it’s not just about the building, it’s about respecting clients’ properties and places and making sure we are spending their money wisely.” There’s a lot of thinking on the spot; the type of work we do is not all off a nicely drawn set of plans.” Because Morison Building takes on a wide variety of projects from around the region, the business’ workload has been steady even through the current recession, with word of mouth referrals common. Morison Building’s first new build was a 190 square metre family home on a two acre property completed about 18 months ago in rural Waipukurau for some friends. “They wanted a nice quality home for an affordable price without going over the top on the square metres, therefore driving up the price.” Most of the design was based on the client’s ideas. A key was spending where it made the most difference; the home’s open plan lounge, dining and kitchen, with walk-in pantry, are Morison Building T T Russell Fredric generous, inviting and well-designed spaces, while its three bedrooms are modestly sized, but the main bathroom and ensuite are beautifully appointed with different materials and colour schemes. Likewise, the 2550mm wall height increases the sense of vertical space, but is a cost saver against a 2.7 metre height while the trendy board and batten clad exterior is also an economical option, as is the oversized single garage which is carpeted and acts as a rumpus room for the kids. A separate two bay high-wall garage was subsequently built, along with a 120 square metre full length deck that provides superb indoor-outdoor flow from the living and bedroom ranchsliders. With the expenditure within budget, the client was even able to add cedar facia and window sills to add a touch of class to the exterior. “I guess it’s about being creative and clever,” Matt says. “We spend the money in the right places and utilise the [available] size. Being a little bit practical has created some perfection in a way.
