A cornerstone of Taranaki’s building sector for over 30 years, New Style Homes by Mike Childs Builders have recently completed the final four homes being built within their own housing development at New Plymouth. Located on land purchased from Francis Douglas Memorial College this own development project from New Style Homes of Stratford, saw the creation of 14 sections, with the final four homes completed by New Style Homes says company founder and licensed, master builder Mike Childs. “We brought some land from the Catholic college that was surplus to their requirements and created Francis Douglas Drive subdivision at Westown, beside the college and its green playing fields,” says Mike. “The last one we finished in August and that was a really nice house intended for intergenerational living. The owners being an older couple and their elderly mother.” Self-described small-time developers, New Style Homes was established in 1990 by Mike who is gradually preparing for retirement and is in the process of passing the family-owned business on to his two sons and one daughter. “My son Nick began his apprenticeship with me at 17, so he’s had 15 years hands on experience house building and is now handling operations here proficiently on the day to day,” says Mike, “ and I have every faith that he and Paige will continue the family tradition of building excellence and service.” New Style Homes offers a wide array of services and have their own in-house architectural designer creating bespoke standalone homes, custom renovations, townhouse developments and select commercial projects. “We’re building the Avon Medical Centre currently and have recently completed an 18 room rest home,” says Mike.
