Sentinel Homes Taranaki franchisees Andrew and Julia Kuriger have a passion for design and excellent build quality which is fundamental to the DNA of their business. During the past four years the Sentinel team has achieved three HOTY gold wins, three regional category wins, along with being nominated for two national Top 100 awards. This year a New Plymouth entry was both a Central North Island Gold and Regional Category winner in the $750,000 to $1 million category. The award winning 238 square metre home was built for a family with older children and exudes contemporary appeal, with attention to detail tangible throughout. Key spaces include three bedrooms, two living spaces, an office, and a ‘Jack and Jill’ bathroom with sole access between two of the bedrooms. The exterior immediately catches the eye with its ultra-sleek Stria and Abodo cladding that is stylishly complemented with copper-toned gutters and downpipes while its generous timber deck helps maximize the main living area with full width ranchsliders. “This home has a beautiful feel to it. The large glass expanse and doors opening out looking towards the sea gives a lovely, light, fresh feel,” Julia says. The creative choices of materials and colour palette reveals the talent of the interior designer client, complimenting Andrew’s overall design, showcasing special features such as the way the kitchen backs onto an internal garden. T T Russell Fredric “With the site being so tight, this allowed us to create a beautiful garden space that the kitchen could look into, flooding light into the space” “Our clients knew what they wanted in this design and were able to work closely with Andrew to see their great ideas realised,” Julia says. “We wanted to create an open kitchen workspace, no scullery tucked away. The northern views can be enjoyed from everywhere. One of the bedrooms is accessed off the dining space so we wanted to hide the door access within the cabinetry to reduce the visual impact from that room.” Thoughtful materials adorn every room and the use of textured walls, hidden doors and LED strip lighting all add interest to individual spaces. These design elements combined have created a truly unique home for a surprisingly modest budget, with the House of the Year award being the icing on the cake. “We feel really proud of this build and know it was a really special house within its category. To be able to produce a beautiful home like this for under $1 million is a great achievement.
