DO OUR READERS KNOW YOU EXIST? Baird Built crafting innovative homes A stunning holiday home built in collaboration with Copeland Associates Architects. Since its establishment in 2021, Taihape-based Baird Built has been chipping away in the local building scene. With a focus on quality craftsmanship, this small but growing company, led by Kyle Baird, is taking on everything from new home builds to renovations—and even some light commercial work. One of Baird Built’s recent projects, a stunning holiday home built in collaboration with Copeland Associates Architects, highlights Kyle’s ability to combine traditional techniques with a modern twist, leaving a lasting impression on everyone involved. This standout project, located near Ohakune in the Ruapehu District, is set against the impressive backdrop of Mt. Ruapehu and surrounded by forests and Department of Conservation land. It is a remarkable example of the integration of a home into its natural setting. The exterior of the home features a distinctive Yakisugi finish, a traditional Japanese technique where timber is charred to create a blackened, weather-resistant surface. This method not only increases the durability of the timber, but has a striking appearance and requires minimal maintenance. Inside, the home offers a contrasting design: light, natural timber finishes and exposed beams create a warm, Scandinavian-inspired feel. This blend of modern and traditional styles, along with the careful attention to material choices, has resulted in a home that is both elegant and enduring. The home stands out not only for its design, but also for its method of construction. Kyle describes this project as “a bit different” from their usual builds. “We prefabricated the panels off-site in a factory, and then assembled them on the property – a first for us, and it worked really well,” he says. This innovative approach of prefabrication proved to be highly efficient, reducing on-site construction timeframes considerably. Copeland Associates Architects’ Barry Copeland is a strong advocate of prefabricated building systems, citing one highlight of this method to be able to close the structure to a weather-proof state much faster than conventional methods. While the Ohakune holiday home is a new experience for Baird Built in terms of prefabrication, the company continues to take on a wide range of projects throughout the Taihape region. In addition to residential work, Baird Built has almost completed earthquake strengthening for the Ruapehu Farm Supply in Taihape, demonstrating their versatility in both residential and commercial construction. Looking ahead, Kyle is optimistic about the future of Baird Built and the potential for more innovative projects like the Ohakune home. “It’s a beautiful home,” Kyle says. “We’re proud of the quality of work we’ve produced, and we’re excited to keep pushing boundaries in the way we build.” T T Anne Boswell Baird Built With its commitment to craftsmanship, innovative building techniques and a growing portfolio of successful projects, Baird Built is well on its way to becoming a leading name in the New Zealand construction industry. 06 388 2008 | byfords.readimix@gmail.com Proudly supporting Baird Built 0800 777 111 SAVE THOUSANDS EXPERTS PERIMETER INSULATION SOLUTIONS OPTIMISATION TOOLS REPORTS CEILING SOLUTIONS DESIGN EARLY DESIGN STAGE
