Hawkes Bay building company, Inspired Projects Limited, have turned their passion for building high performing homes into a partnership with eHaus, - a national group of designers and builders creating New Zealand’s healthiest, comfiest, highest performing new homes. Owners of Inspired Projects Limited, Chris and Tracey Flude are excited about having acquired the eHaus license earlier this year, which gives them the rights to design and construct eHaus projects across the region, from Gisborne to Central Hawke’s Bay. Inspired Projects are currently underway with its first eHaus build within the district – a two-bedroom, two-bathroom, energy efficient home spanning 120 sq. metres located in Havelock North. “The eHaus design philosophy is rooted in passive house principles, which emphasise energy efficiency and sustainability,” says Chris. “Our eHaus project in Havelock North is for a retired couple who subdivided their land so they could build the high performing home they had always wanted.” The home is being built using SIP panels ((Structural Insulated Panels) and will be an eHaus Euro, representing some of the highest performing homes in New Zealand. The exterior is clad in a combination of sleek metal profiling and BGC fibrous cement. “The house is going up on an elevated site, being built over a stream in a neat little gully which is very private,” says Chris. “All the houses we build get put through the Passive House Planning Package (PHPP) which is energy modelling software that tells us how a home is going to perform, including the heating and cooling demands the house is going to have.” These houses are designed to maintain a constant internal temperature of 20-25°C reducing the need for artificial heating or cooling. As a result, homeowners enjoy comfortable living conditions with very low energy consumption. “The clients wanted a warm, dry and comfortable, healthier home with minimal power costs each month,” says Chris. “That’s precisely what an eHaus delivers.” With several other eHaus projects in the planning stages, Chris and Tracey are focused on promoting the benefits of high performing energy efficient homes for the Hawkes Bay, T T Bernadette Cooney BUILDING showing potential homeowners the significant differences between standard code-built homes and eHaus. Chris explains that there are five key passive home components. “The first is a high level of thermal insulation, the second is high performance window and door joinery including double or triple glazed timber or UPVC products. The third key component is thermal bridge free construction to prevent heat loss and condensation.” The fourth component of high performing, thermally efficient homes is airtightness, measured by air leakage testing during construction. “And the fifth is a mechanical heat recovery ventilation (MHRV) system, which is the absolute heart of the home. The MHRV extracts moist, stale air and supplies clean tempered air throughout the house. Chris is an LBP and registered Master Builder with over 20 years of building experience including four years project managing high end developments overseas. Tracey comes from a property law background and is a diligent administrator.
