South Taranaki Quarries is experiencing significant growth and expanding its reach beyond local projects to major infrastructure initiatives in the lower North Island. The company, which operates three fully consented quarry sites along the Taranaki southwestern coastline, has recently made strategic moves to strengthen its position in the extractives industry. One of the most notable developments is the appointment of Tony Dowd as the new Quarry Operations Manager. With over 35 years of experience in the industry, Tony brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the role. “It’s an exciting change for us as Tony has been 35 years in the industry and brings a significant amount of experience, leadership and knowledge to the business. In a practical sense, it will help us raise the bar for the operation and improve standards across the board,” explains South Taranaki Quarries general manager Todd Nicholson. Tony, who has held an A-grade Quarry Manager Certificate of Competence for over 30 years and received multiple industry awards, is poised to take the company to new heights. “South Taranaki Quarries has developed a reputation as a high quality supplier of products and has a strong focus on health and safety and environmental standards. It has all the resources to continue on its current path,” says Tony. T T Karen Phelps After more than 30 years of operation, Testlab Wanganui continues to prove that independence and lexibility are key ingredients for success in the materials testing industry. "We're not corporate owned – we're independent and can be lexible and responsive to client needs," says Managing Director Hector Grant, who took over the company ive years ago, building on his commercial project management background. The IANZ-accredited laboratory has established itself as a trusted name in civil and geotechnical material testing throughout the central North Island, with a track record that speaks for itself – so much so that advertising isn't necessary with work coming via word of mouth. The company's reputation has led to involvement in numerous high-pro ile projects, including the Waipipi Wind Farm and RNZAF Base Ohakea. The Waipipi wind farm project showcased the company's ability to deliver under pressure, meeting tight timeframes even during the challenges of Covid-19. Meanwhile, the ongoing ive-year involvement at RNZAF Base Ohakea demonstrates Testlab Wanganui’s capability to handle long-term, complex projects. Operating as a family business, with Hector's wife Siobhan Grant serving as director and administrator, and another business partner Robert Fee as director and lab technician, Testlab Wanganui maintains the personal touch that larger corporate entities often struggle to deliver. The TestlabWanganui delivering world-class service to NZ company's comprehensive range of services includes quality assurance for civil engineering materials, quarry quality control, roading, building platforms for both residential and commercial projects, major earthworks monitoring, rock wall protection, and bitumen spray truck testing to name but a few. The company’s client list reads like a who's who of the construction industry including major players like Fulton Hogan, Downer, and Higgins. It has also built strong relationships with South Taranaki Quarries and engineering irms such as Red Jacket, Cohesive and RDCL, handling nationwide site and lab work. The company's growth has been methodical and purposeful. This careful expansion has included progression into geotechnical services, with plans to extend reach into the Taupo and Rotorua regions. "Every year we have expanded into di erent regions and grown the team," says Hector. Despite its success and growth ambitions, Testlab Wanganui remains committed to its founding principles of providing responsive, client-focused service. The fully equipped soil and aggregate testing facilities, combined with the ability to handle both ield and laboratory work, ensures clients receive comprehensive testing solutions under one roof.
