These developments have allowed the company to plan and commit to jobs with greater confidence. “These major projects need suppliers with the reliability and credibility to mitigate against risk. We are now getting in the conversation and fitting into that category of supplier,” says Todd. In addition, the company has invested heavily in modernising its operations. “In the past couple of years, we’ve invested significantly in modern, fit-for-purpose plant and machinery,” says Todd. “This investment, totalling over $1,500,000 in quarry infrastructure, plant, and equipment, has positioned South Taranaki Quarries to improve its standards and execute with greater confidence.” This growth strategy is already bearing fruit. The company has recently supplied materials for significant infrastructure projects, including the New Plymouth Port and the Te Ara Tapua shared pathway in Wellington Harbour. It’s also recently committed to supplying material for the State Highway 3 rehabilitation for this upcoming season marking the first time the company has supplied to a highway rehabilitation project. Despite the challenging economic climate of the past year, South Taranaki Quarries has found opportunities. Todd credits this partly to the local council’s investment in the region’s future and the presence of “smart, progressive people” initiating projects. Todd emphasises the importance of the South Taranaki Quarries team in the company’s growth strategy. “Everything starts with our team and the commitment from our people,” he says. A family-run operation with roots dating back to 2006 South Taranaki Quarries is owned by Horizon Trust, which has been invested in the extractives industry for almost two decades. Its local supply covers a total area of 1,600m2 kms with an extended supply for critical infrastructure projects reaching as far north as the New Plymouth Port to as far south as The Wellington City waterfront.
