T T Russell Fredric Bespoke, beautiful and of the best quality, joinery designed and built by JS Kitchens has been gracing the homes and businesses of its many clients for nearly four decades. Owned by James and Monica Smaling, the business is based in Palmerston North and services Manawatu, Horowhenua, Kapiti, Porirua and Wellington, but has supplied joinery well beyond these regions. JS Kitchens provides a full design, build and installation service for kitchens, bathrooms and any other spaces from its well-equipped workshop that includes a computer-controlled CNC machine for accuracy and consistency. The installation of the CNC cutter about eight years ago was a both a big investment and a gamechanger for the business and continues to be crucial to its efficiency and production capability. An early adopter of software also, JS Kitchens has been using a 3D design programme for almost as long as the business has been running. The result is a fully streamlined process from concept to design, costing and manufacture, with JS Kitchen’s showroom being part of the process by helping people with their design, material and hardware choices. “Everything’s bespoke, there’s nothing we do that’s repetitive,” James says. JS Kitchens employs 12 staff, with two being full-time CAD designers who create 3D renders that can be emailed to a client for initial review and further input as needed. The design is then priced and the project can proceed when the final quotation is accepted. As a Hettich endorsed showroom, JS Kitchens focus on quality includes exclusively incorporating Hettich’s soft close drawer and hinge systems into the joinery it manufactures. “Hettich hardware comes with a lifetime guarantee; as long as you own the home, they will replace any failed hardware at no cost.” During the past 30-plus years James has seen a vast array of new materials, tapware and hardware options become available. With an even greater range of choices within each category and with the guidance of JS Kitchens staff, a client can make a personal statement in the look and feel while also having a highly functional space that suits their practical needs. Cabinetry and benchtops can include laminated melamine and acrylic boards, thermoform patterned doors, engineered stone, natural granite, timber and stainless steel. James believes the cost of a kitchen bought from a big box hardware retailer compared to a professionally manufactured and installed kitchen typically ends up being the same, or can cost more once the time and potential difficulties of installation are factored in. He also believes a better result can be achieved using a joiner, resulting in a higher quality finish that will stand the test of time. Additionally, the quality of JS Kitchens has been proven over decades, with repeat clients returning for new kitchens, while some of their older kitchens simply need new fronts to make them look and function as brand new. After an extremely busy few years JS Kitchens have noticed the workload ease, but James is still happy with the current amount of forward work and values the relationships the business has with builders and others who have consistently trusted him with their projects. For a renovation, a new kitchen remains one of the best upgrades that adds value, appeal and saleability to a house, James says.
